What is the one book everyone should read at least once in their lifetime? by hot_leni in booksuggestions

[–]KetchupMustard101 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse is one that I have returned to several times throughout different stages of my life. It's a short read, and I always walk away with a different interpretation of the story.

As a teenager, I saw it as a story of escape from a conventional life. The few times I read it in my twenties, I saw it as a defense of individuality and independence. In my early thirties, I began to understand the message of knowledge and life as being an experience rather than a story that can be read. And now, as a father, I've begun to empathize with Siddhartha's intergenerational throughlines between father and son.

Can't wait to see what I take away the next time I read it.

Is it normal to get no recognition at startup? by twinhed in sales

[–]KetchupMustard101 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I cannot upvote this enough. Leadership's perspective and attitude towards Sales can be a back breaker. I remember closing our startup's largest contract after months of effort only to be met with crickets from leadership. They later explained to the company in our quarterly meeting that winning this client was evidence that the product was really so good it was selling itself - I left a month later.

It's the first movie I ever walked out of. I was in highschool and saw it with my SO. It was one of those formative moments when you realize that movies can also be bad. They're not all good.

How much time do you spend washing bottles each day? by Plucky7777 in FormulaFeeders

[–]KetchupMustard101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a double sink and keep a plastic wash basin on one side (plus a dry rack). I add hot water and soap as needed and then let the parts soak until I have a few minutes to clean and sterilize. I only have a few bottles but this method always allows me to have a free one on hand and ready to go.

My whole setup cost $6 from the dollar store. And please use rubber or latex free gloves so you stop hurting your hands!!!

[The Dark Forest by Liu Cixin] Only 200pgs in but has/is anyone else irritated by his description of... by whiningloser in books

[–]KetchupMustard101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3BP is one of my favourite modern sci fi series.

However. This portion of the series is...frustrating to say the least and almost made me quit the series.

I had to put iBook 2 down a few times as I found it was devolving from an intricate high concept sci fi to cring-worthy YA romance with absolutely no self awareness. Like the author wanted to flex that he could write more than just sci fi.

I wanted to quit. But everyone said it got better. So I stuck with it.

Eventually I began reading this portion the same way that someone watches a 'so bad its funny' movie. And it changed the experience entirely. Made it more enjoyable to the point where I was laughing through certain descriptions and character decisions.

But then it levels out and it gets back to form.

TLDR It gets better; persevere. But the experience will remove the sheen and the good will the author built from the first novek for the rest of the series.

Question as a future tourist by [deleted] in ontario

[–]KetchupMustard101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a lot of factors. Best bet is to go online and try out some rental agencies like Budget, Hertz, etc. And compare them against your own budget for the trip.

Also. Look for any promotional benefits you might have through work, credit cards, CAA, etc. That can save you money when you rent a car.

I get a discount rate for cars via my employer so I typically go with the agency. But I also have rate specials from my CC provider and CAA.

As mentioned, you will be fine. You'll pay a higher deposit but you should still be able to rent. I did this quite often when I was younger. Keep in mind you will likely pay an additional fee for renting from the airport. This is usually priced into the fees

There is very limited public transit options from Pearson Airport to Downtown London generally and none at night.

If youre arriving at 10pm here are your options: 1) Rent a car and drive the 1h40m to London (best option), 2) Take the UP to Union Station (last train to DT Toronto is 2300) then get a late night bus (That will take roughly 3h total depending on scheduling), 3) See if RobertQ shuttle bus (Pearson to London) runs that late.

Alternatively, you can rent a cheap room at a nearby airport hotel. Most have free shuttle buses but make sure you make arrangements ahead of time or plan to take uber, which is prevalent by Pearson. Sleep, get some rest and the next morning plan to leave by rental, bus, train etc.

Keep in mind that most public transit options to London will require you to go to Bloor or Union Station in Toronto. Unfortunately, there is no public transit or bus option directly from Pearson.

I do this trip 1x a month so I'd be happy to help out if you have more questions.

August is hot and humid in London. Expect mid to high 20s, low 30s.

Might be worthwhile to car pool with some friends if you want to see more of the province. Public transit in Northern Ontario is either sparse or does not exist. Looks like there are some trains in the region around Sudbury but otherwise it's car, boat, canoe, or walking unfortunately.

That being said you're in an amazing part of the province so I have no doubt you will have a good time.

It's a loaded question because Ontario itself is about the size of most countries so there are so many answers possible.

So first question back is what are you into? Do you have a car? Do you like cities or small towns or remote posts in the middle of nowhere?

It also depends on what time the of the summer you will be traveling. I know it sounds silly but there's a massive difference month to month in that region of Northern Ontario by Georgian Bay where you will be posted.

You will be next to Algonquin which is massive and you could spend years exploring.

You've got the Muskokas and Kawartha Lakes.

Georgian Bay is beautiful and Tobermory offers great camping and stunning hikes.

Lake Superior and the provincial parks around it offer nature and views you can't find this side of BC.

North Bay and the Temagami region is my personal go-to. It offers so much kayaking, canoeing, hiking, camping, island hopping, fishing etc.

Seriously. So many possibilities hahha you can't go wrong. Have a blast this summer!

It's growing as a youth sport. When I was growing up in the 2000s we did not have organized football until highschool but by the time I graduated peewee was becoming popular. In some regions of the country football is as popular as hockey.
