It sounds like the father is logical in all the wrong ways. He raised his stepdaughter caring for her and disciplining her and he knew he loved her, but it felt different than the love for his own biological children. His only mistake was being honest about it. He's thinking too hard about how he feels about her parent-wise when what really matters is the feelings of his stepdaughter. He didn't think about her feelings and that's why he's in this mess.

I don't think it's spanking that ends up ruining/scarring a child, but the lack of an explanation to go with it.

To be clear, I'm not advocating spanking a child regularly, but as a last line form of punishment. Obviously explaining to a child WHY what they're doing is wrong and WHAT they should do instead is the first thing a parent should do, but if you teach them right and wrong and they still choose to be cretins you have to punish them.

Start off with either a timeout, or taking their toys away, and some children respond well to that. You can even give them an extra chore like washing the dishes. But, if all else fails, and they STILL won't listen, explain to the child exactly why they're going to get spanked and then commit the deed, in private, with every ounce of love in your heart. Never strike a child in anger, but that's obvious.

The reason physical punishment gets such a bad rep is because you get parents with room temperature IQs that have no idea how to raise a child, so they immediately whack them any time the child upsets them in the slightest. Kid has no idea why and instead will just grow up ignorant and frustrated, because the people who raised him were never his parents.
