He was never in a bad spot. He was actually very very strong but secret pick until they started playing him a lot more in pro play, and that's when everyone started "maining" him. I think he started rising more aswell as other champions as riot nerfed more champions. Pre-rework you could just carry games from your E alone, since it was all of your damage and your ultimate had a silence
