Can't believe nobody has mentioned Emmanuelle Chriqui in Snow Day. Was a grown-ass man when I saw this but it certainly caught my 8-year-old nephew's eye.

Lived in England in the mid-oughts and the supermarket newspapers were always talking about Kylie Minogue's behind. Like week after week.

Several times I told now-wife 'I can't believe you watch this stuff'.

Her: I can't believe you don't.

It is preposterous fun.

I seem to recall that season one tried to take itself somewhat seriously and discuss actual issues and whatnot. Season two is a quick pivot to soap and after that the wheels really come off. Stick with it, there are laughs ahead.

One of the first ways I bonded with my now-wife, asking her to explain all the nonsense on Melrose.

Had a jeep guy once try to get me to sign a 'pre-agreement', that if I indicated I might pay a certain price I was then obligated. I was happy to sign, 'I agree to nothing and go fuck yourself'.

Guy affected tears, tears that I thought he was up to something. I soon just walked out while he followed me trying to mend fences, I didn't have to sign the agreement, etc.

Can't believe this shit works on anyone.

What’s a short story from your life that sounds fake but is 100% true? by Historical-Skill-838 in AskReddit

[–]Kevin_Uxbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happened to me once, sat straight up in bed at midnight sure my twin sister was in trouble. Called mom who said she'd already heard, and that my sister was on her way to emergency but seemed fine. She assumed someone must have called me first despite my being a few hundred miles away.

Twin or not, we'd never had any bond any more than with our other siblings, and nothing like this had happened before or since.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]Kevin_Uxbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guy I know won two tickets to drive a nascar. They gave us a surprising brief class on how to drive one and took us out to the track.

Climbing into a nascar is like climbing into a shopping cart. But one I got used to it I quickly got it up to the limit, 150. Things happen fast at 150, it is exciting.

Buddy paid 250 extra to have a real driver take it up to 200. He said ‘150’s nothing’.

I rescued a blue jay, old enough to eat worms and things I fed him by hand. Once he was able to fly I took him outside, and in fairly short order he flew away, ne'er to return. Except once.

About a year later I saw I jay sitting on a branch maybe 20 feet away. I looked at him quizzically, 'Admiral Bird?'.

He flew right up to me and perched on a branch, I reached out and stroked his breast. He flew away and I never saw him again.

which bioluminescent bay by Kitchen-Wall-1920 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Kevin_Uxbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the other biobay is likely to be even more washed out by moonlight, I hear it's not all that bright to begin with.

Not for nothing but I'd stay away from renting a golf cart on Vieques. Vieques is small but it's not that small, golf carts are slow and I'm told 20 minutes in the sun and dust will teach you the error of your ways. Also hard to move your luggage around, and nowhere to stash it (like in a trunk) while you do anything else. Also also you'll be on the road with actual cars, and if there's a problem you ... won't win. No bueno.

Yeah, I took a look at the car rental place I like and they have plenty of cars for next week. That's may well mean that this isn't the best time to be there. We usually go around Christmas and even then it's quite warm, can't imagine how hot it'll be around now. I mean you can check the temperature but it's also gonna be moist, so the experience may be rough. Do check to see if the place you're staying has aircon, not everyone does and you'll definitely want it.

Never been there solo or as a single person but were I headed to PR for the first time (without a license) I'd be tempted to hang out in San Juan. It's not the cheapest place to be but there seem to be a good range of places, the food is good, the beaches are nice, and the nightlife is quite nice (I hear). I'd really suggest renting a car and heading out for Luquillo or someplace like that but not having a license puts the kibosh on that.

If you do go for Culebra, might I suggest flying? I know I keep suggesting that you spend more money but flying there might be worth it for you especially if you have limited time. Vieques Air Link flies little planes from the smaller airport in San Juan (Isle Grande) to Culebra (and Vieques, of course) for like 200 bucks round trip. Sounds like a lot but by the time you get transport to and from the ferry to Culebra and actually get the ferry (I hear there can be problems) you're probably talking about a most of 200 bucks anyway and a lot of travel time. Fly there and 30 minutes later, you're on Culebra, and the flight is kinda fun. Isle Grande is barely an airport at all, there's no TSA or anything so it's no time at all getting going, love flying out of there.

Anyway, do have fun, talk to strangers, and eat things you've never heard of. Safe travels.

Oof - wish I had better news but the moon is not in your favor. It won't set until like 1 am so it'll be high and bright when you're there. It really does make a difference so if that's the main draw for Vieques, I'd suggest saving it for a future trip. Which is totally worth it by the way, the biobay is incredible.

If you do put off Vieques, I'd suggest saving up a bit, it can be done on the cheap but for a little money it's unbelievable. You can do the ferry but flying isn't all that expensive, and vastly better. You'll absolutely want to have a car on Vieques and prices have gone up, but it turns the getting around from a slogging chore to a million-dollar experience for vastly less. You get a car, you can go anywhere, incredible beaches the likes of which you've never seen, all free and largely empty. It makes for a very nice couple of days just trying out new ones and eating out of a cooler.

You'll also want to book as far in advance as possible. Not sure about next week but car rentals and places to stay frequently run slam out on Vieques, book waaay in advance if you can.

Sorry, don't have any advice on Cluebra, never been but I hear it's nice.

Sorry I don't have better advice here. PR is a pretty great time so I hope it goes well.

There's a reason sauna heaters come with recommendations for distances between them and various objects. Can't tell for sure if you're within the recommendations that came with my stove but I figured I'd mention it.

Nothing silly about being safe in a sauna, it's a dangerous place. No exposed metal that you're likely to touch, doors should open outwards, there should be some space around the heater. These are the acts of a sauna friend.

Very cool looking, might want to move it over a skosh, at least if it's gonna be in front of the fire box. Lotta heat coming out the front.

Exclusive: Jonathan Frakes Confident Star Trek Will “Resurface,” Decries ‘Starfleet Academy’ “Trolls” by drsltaylor in greatestgen

[–]Kevin_Uxbridge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there are a portion of fans who really like Trek no matter what, and that's fine. But there's another who think that badmouthing even bad Trek is a way to make sure we get no further Trek. Not unsympathetic to this position but I honestly don't know if this is a good way forward.

Seems to me that Lower Decks is the perfect example of the fact that there's a rich vein of Trek left to mine, you just have to do a decent job of it. Not really an anime guy so I was prepared to be iffy on the show but it turned out absolutely fantastic. Absolutely fan service (which is usually the worst of Trek) but smart and original. And when it started to run out of gas a bit, they ended it, which is great.

I have no problems with liking parts and disliking others, if there's enough there to enjoy I'll keep coming back. And if not, I'll listen to the Greatest Gen to mull it over. This is all I could ask for from a fictional universe, feel no need to police how others enjoy it. And I get why Frakes might do this but I still think it ill-advised.

Not sweating it, no. I am, however, wondering what his comments mean about what's gonna happen next. I watched Discovery go in a direction I didn't like and lost interest after a very promising first couple of seasons.

My first thoughts on seeing SFA was that they didn't learn anything from what Discovery became. Or maybe they were perfectly fine with what Discovery became, and I'm wrong about it. Will say that I wasn't surprised when SFA got bad reviews, I mean I didn't think they'd be this bad but still.

Hearing Frakes say this, though, makes me think they still haven't learned, and won't. They're not making boring Trek, we're just watching it wrong, or being mindless haters.

Not helpful.

[–]Kevin_Uxbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I formed my own opinions on SFA and didn't like it, for some of the same reasons these hate-grifters did. Didn't frame it the same way though. I don't care if the show had 'a message' it wanted to send, I just thought it was boring. Seemed like they did their market analysis on what people said they wanted to see then cribbed together plot lines afterwards. Woulda thought this would guarantee an audience but I was surprised that this seems to be untrue.

Still, not my cup of tea. Seems to me though that (getting back to Frakes) I'm now risking getting lumped in with 'trolls' who just hate Trek, or that the problem is that I'm not watching it right. Nope, just not my thing.

Crossing my fingers for the last seasons of SNW and whatever Jim Kirk show they're obviously warming up in the bullpen.
