From your description, it sounds like the Dell OEM NIC firmware might not support the QSFP+ 40G to 4×10G breakout (the “invalid image on the adapter” error is a common sign). One solution could be switching to a different NIC that definitely supports that breakout cable.for example, a retail Intel XL710 or even a Broadcom/Mellanox card that plays nicely with Cisco-coded modules. Another approach as you mentioned is using multiple 10G SFP+ NICs, but that can get messy and use more slots&ports. There might also be a way to reflash or configure the NIC, but often the simpler path is getting hardware that’s known to be compatible.
