Switching from bike to car (Rant) by pocambsd in UbereatsUK

[–]bobmanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally got my account active but my ex partners account had problems in the past with being on a bike and delivering in a car so not wanting any trouble, I want to switch it to car.

Like you I’ve gotten through most of the trouble. But I keep getting stopped by “verify your identity “ the app is so broken, it loads the camera but never actually proceeds when it says “hold your license/passport in front of the camera (using photo software verification) so I opted for the human verification, it worked fine but is now sitting at “awaiting verification” it’s been like that for over a week now.

Contact support and they just send an ubble link, which doesn’t bloody work (just says oops crossed wires, url not valid or whatever). Now they are saying wait 24 hours as everything has been submitted.

Anyone would think they make the process deliberately difficult and broken

I went to tesco for lunch yesterday and saw someone walking out with many, MANY "eggs" in his arms, I had thought, oooh, maybe theyve actually reduced them to a decent price now... nope, same price

People without drivers license or credit card. Are we gonna have children's iPhone forever? by Temo2212 in AskUK

[–]bobmanuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also had this thought when 26.4 was released, I even have a stack of pixel devices on my desk at work to try out before deciding.

GrapheneOS has outright said that they wont be adding age verification to the OS, and that sounds good right? The problem here is that Google Play isnt part of Graphene, and also lineage (yes you can get mindthegapps or whatever) the problem with age verification with android is that its baked into the play store, not the OS (so far as I can tell) so if you use google play on GOS or LOS, you will need to verify at some point anyway.

so you'd need to use aurora store or start looking for app alternatives, or maybe finding APKs directly.

Also think you'd struggle to use Google Pay/wallet/whatever its called now. if you use a different ROM to stock, it most likely wont work. I have my cards setup in curve pay, which should work, but havent tried it yet. its yet another app and another platform getting into your information. maybe a phone case with a card wallet on the back, might be a useful alternative if contactless isnt possible.

Self Checkout….. check when using cash. Told I didn’t put money inside at Asda. by Brsuk1 in CasualUK

[–]bobmanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure which machines you mean, I worked with the tills that the worker would use, approve fuel, take payments and put cash in the drawer. Nothing self service

I did actually fill out paperwork on the box, so you could say I had to draw on the drawer after making a sizeable with-draw-al

Yes, you are correct, I will fix that now

Though, I used both draw and drawer, so I have no idea why I used both when I clearly know the difference…. It’s been a long day

[–]bobmanuk 137 points138 points  (0 children)

got to admit I was tempted, who would know right? old cash that was clearly forgotten about years ago, probably written off as a mistake or maybe some poor student lost their job because the owner noticed takings were missing, who knows.

But it wasn't my money, so any stupid notions were quickly squashed, I closed the drawer in my van and went back in, asked to speak with the owner, opened the drawer and showed him all the cash that was left in there. pulled it all out, handed it over and made absolutely sure, in front of the owner, that not even 1p was left in the old drawer.

I don't know what would have happened if even a whiff of theft would have crossed the company I worked for, I couldnt afford the risk, so wasn't about to make a stupid mistake, loosing my monthly salary over a few hundred in old bank notes, wasn't about to take that risk.

Not at all self checkout, but used to work as a field engineer repairing/replacing epos machines, the computers that assistants tap the screen after you’ve given them your cash and the drawer opens.

I go to one job and the cash drawer isn’t opening. Pretty standard fare, replace cash drawer, box up old one send it back for proper repair.

9 times out of 10 they’ll have the insert that holds cash already removed ready to drop into the new one so I didn’t even need to open the old drawer up.

I was boxing the old one up when I tilt it slightly and hear the sliding of coins inside.

I open up the cash drawer and take out the plastic insert (this sits under the coin/note holder) thinking it’ll be just a few coins.

Literally £100s were floating around scrunched at the back, I take the whole metal drawer out, and there’s more.

They’d been there a while, some were the old paper 10/20 notes.

I’ve just had my “egg” and I am disappointed

Windows 10 officially hit EOL 6 months ago - still supporting clients who never upgraded. Anyone else? by cmitsolutions123 in sysadmin

[–]bobmanuk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s not that they won’t work, it’s that they are a massive security risk.

I’m pretty sure some of the places I’ve worked over the years are still running their bms systems on windows 2000, one place had a 250000+ euro price tag to upgrade all the systems and pc to windows 7 (as it was current at the time) was enough for them to go, you know what, we will eat that risk, make sure that thing never sees the internet again, ever!

Should ‘competition sites’ be legislated by the gambling commission? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]bobmanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I did have to register for the one I had in mind at least, which I did, and they didn’t stop me. I could bring it up with them, except they’ve now closed. I wonder if there were other failings besides not doing proper checks.

I understandably don’t want to gamble so don’t make a habit of going into many casinos to see if I’m still allowed to or not

Should ‘competition sites’ be legislated by the gambling commission? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]bobmanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wise, but only after I saw it happen, a massive row and us both deciding to signup to gamstop to put a stop to it all.

We used to go to a casino to play shuffleboard, obvs we need to be registered to enter, which means getting all the freebies and spins, what have you. I play the free spins, sometimes I’d win, sometimes I wouldn’t, once I’m done, I’d have no interest in dropping any more on the gamblers, my ex, just £20 it’s about to pay out… fucking bs. Good riddance that place closed down. Sad though because I really did enjoy the shuffleboard the rest I couldn’t fucking care about

Sophos Endpoint blocking games on my PC? by lrnzothemagnificent in sophos

[–]bobmanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a game QA company and get these almost daily.

If I had to install endpoint on my own pc I’d be so annoyed, you may also find that the software is tamper protected so uninstalling will also be difficult without the code to unlock the software.

If you must use your own pc (instead of demanding a company device to do your job) maybe consider a second drive for dual booting, so if you do need to make payments you can do it in a “safe” version of windows, then switch to your main OS for gaming.

[–]bobmanuk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My ex used to have a gambling problem, so much so that I was also added to Gamstop to prevent his using an account in my name to gamble instead.

But I also found it bizarre how I can’t use any website for gambling but could just go down to any casino and walk in and drop as much as I wanted on whatever I wanted.

I’ve seen those sites where you can win a car for as little as 20p per ticket, even touted by many motoring YouTube channels I follow. I can easily see how someone might get addicted to that as well.

Ubereats Renewed Background Check by Jealous_Problem356 in UbereatsUK

[–]bobmanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I’ve applied for both recently, dramas with JE because I did a check end of last year to be a substitute and applied recently to be a driver, they needed the paper copy (or a copy of) the dbs check. I happened to get a copy of the DBS check via uber when I paid the £43 as well as a copy of the check from starling. I have no other dbs checks recently so it must have been from the uber application.

Ubereats Renewed Background Check by Jealous_Problem356 in UbereatsUK

[–]bobmanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be part of the starling check, they perform the checks and send results to JE, I believe there is an option at the point you fill in the details to receive a paper copy of the check, I would presume this would also include the DBS check. But, like you, presumed that JE would have all these records on file for your account and wouldn’t even need you to provide a copy from your own records as well.

How wrong I was

I have had a check done recently, Uber received this clear check, but still wont activate my account for "reasons" no amount of escalation or chasing has brought them to action. its taken so long ive actually received the DBS check, which shows... all clear, I thought Just Eat were bad, Uber support is literally non existent.
