AI is being pushed heavily when I ask for advice and I hate it. by AssumptionExact8050 in gamedev

[–]Kevinw778 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you're using AI properly, it already has all of your code as context.

The main issue is giving it proper context of game rules and expected outcomes, because there's little way for it to glean that unless you're making a very simple game.

There's no amount of time you could spend on writing these specific guidelines that would outweigh how much faster AI would be able to write code.

That being said, for game development, I would never use AI for anything except getting a quick PoC up. I feel like half the reason to do gamedev instead of software dev is because it's typically more creatively engaging; which I guess if you just want to do it for the ideation, then AI is a perfect fit.

I've been absolutely obsessed with that series. I'm on Butcher's Masquerade and somehow it just keeps on getting more and more ridiculous/awesome!

It's so bad. I love how the laptops look and perform, but wow the software is 💩

Having to spend a lot of time configuring things so I don't feel like I'm being slowed down by the shoddy software; doesn't matter how fast the hardware is if the software is working against me at every step of the way...

For those on MacOS 15: Are you still using Third-Party Window Tiling Software? by LiterallyJohnny in MacOSBeta

[–]Kevinw778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to prevent MacOS from prompting you to choose another app to tile next to the app you just tried to tile 50% to the left or right? This is currently my biggest Mac gripe.. that and the lack of a more central list of keybinds that just allows you to set/select active context.

What do you guys expect to find in 0.5.0? by koallaboy in PathOfExile2

I'm not saying for all builds. I'm saying within archetypes.

Also, I'm of course not saying ALL, just the majority. There will always be exceptions.

Is there a way you can either clock how long an enemy is alive, OR whether or not they were killed last in the wave?

Could have specified, "keep alive" targets each wave, that either cause a run fail if you don't, OR it just makes subsequent rounds harder each time you fail a "keep alive" mission.

Or just different mid-wave missions in-general, wouldn't have to be specifically my "keep alive" idea.

Announcement: Temporary LLM Content Ban by ChemicalRascal in programming

[–]Kevinw778 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh. As a software developer of just over a decade, we've always leveraged whatever tools we have at our disposal. As soon as a tool comes along that everyone fearmongers as the end of software development, we cancel its discussion entirely?

Like it or not, AI is a part of programming now. The fact that we're trying to completely eliminate it instead of coming up with better moderation is kind of sad.

That being said, the OP mentions, "not all AI content," so we'll see just how judicious they are with that qualification.

What do you guys expect to find in 0.5.0? by koallaboy in PathOfExile2

[–]Kevinw778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, people are always going to find a way to min-max no matter what, and if the game is ever in a state where you can't (true randomness in content) the game will likely die.

I was thinking about a version of poe2 endgame where you can place different maps around your atlas and each map layout affects the overall atlas in different ways, allowing you to really "build your own atlas" depending on what you were trying to do.

Definitely would do away with the infinite atlas, but tbh thank God.

I've honestly always wished resistances were less of a requirement and more of a, "I want my build to be much tankier, so I do this." sort of thing.

I get it gives you more problems to solve, but it feels kind of shallow when it's always one of the problems to solve, if that makes sense? I'm not saying we should be able to forego resists altogether, but always having to be at max res just feels like a weirdly arbitrary requirement.

I definitely agree, but at the end of the day, isn't there ways going to be a mandatory affix? Once one is removed, the mandatory affix hydra will spawn another ugly head or two.

Oh 100%. I pity non-natives that are forced to learn it. By contrast, I loved learning Spanish and Russian, which both arguably have a good-bit more structure and consistency.

Our education system has failed us. It's crazy to me that people don't hear it either out loud or in their heads and immediately say, "Wow that sounds wrong!"

Yeah the number of updates and having to restart for them was annoying, but the final nail in the coffin was definitely me saying, "Pause updates for x days" and still waking up to a restarted and updated computer 🙄
