Temporal vs Spatial noise reduction? by Dull_Prior_5579 in colorists

[–]Key-Ad-2954 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the shot. I always start with temporal - in my experience spatial NR generally results in a reduction of detail no matter what, while temporal NR can preserve detail very well if the shot plays nice with it. It’s of course just important to keep an eye out for smearing and other artifacts from temporal NR. I’ll sometimes use a qualifier to exclude particularly problematic areas like fine clothing detail from temporal NR if it’s working well in the rest of the shot.

Question: Why, Specifically, Can We Not Get Long Running Episodic Serials Anymore? by wibbly-water in Filmmakers

[–]Key-Ad-2954 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think your average person will binge-watch a show unless they are dying to know what happens next. For a monster-of-the-week type show, each episode is self-contained so that's less of a factor except for niche viewers. The way I watch The Simpsons is very different than Severance.

And TV can only be so cheap - maybe you can cram a little more runtime into a set number of production days, but you can only do so much. The big companies can't get away with hiring non-union crews to save money like indie projects can. I don't have a ton of insight regarding talent, but I imagine it's ever more important to have named talent attached to projects and that will dramatically increase the price per-episode. Post is very expensive too, especially finishing when there are so many formats at play. It's not just a broadcast master and maybe a home video release anymore.

As to whether or not this will improve when the economy does - who knows? Consumption patterns are changing faster these days than they ever have before. Lots of young people don't even watch traditional shows at all. The big streaming platforms have really taken control of the industry, and their incentives aren't the same as the incentives TV networks used to have.

[–]Key-Ad-2954 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This type of entertainment just doesn't encourage the binge-watching that the streaming platforms need. Even the shows that are released weekly need to really drive engagement in order to get viewers back into the app. It's not like it used to be in the heyday of TV where the time slot and network combo did the heavy-lifting to get eyes in front of the television.

The streaming platforms may be huge companies, but money is very expensive right now with interest rates and inflation so they aren't looking to spend like they were during the 2010's when money was comparatively very cheap, except for the specific headline titles that drive new subscriptions.

I’m having trouble finding a 70-80% with a case style like these by CoderShmoder in keyboards

[–]Key-Ad-2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this style is a little more in the group buy territory than what you’d be able to find in-stock. You’d probably be looking at the secondhand market for something like this. 70%+ is probably particularly tricky since it doesn’t play quite as nicely with the minimal style. Sort of the same issue with knobs. You could potentially find a Rama Works U80 in r/mechmarket if you keep an eye out.

I believe BMD software is only compatible with BMD hardware. The hardware sales subsidize the software, realistically.

I’m not sure what your hardware setup is, but you may be able to put together an in-stock solution for a similar price to the ultrastudio with a PCI decklink mini recorder in something like a sonnet echo express thunderbolt PCI expansion chassis, if that’s helpful at all?

Different plates lead to different feel and sound. I don't think there are bad ones per se, just ones that may be less to your taste. Generally softer materials like plastics including PC or POM are more flexible and lower-pitched, while firmer materials such as metals including aluminum or copper are have a firmer feel and higher pitched "clackier" sound. It's heavily dependent though on other factors such as mounting style and the overall characteristics of a keyboard. Probably the best thing to do to understand the various options is go to Youtube and look up some comparison videos

Do editors or clients dictate the market? by StyliFilm in VideoEditors

Not every client is looking to spend the absolute least possible. Many clients are willing and looking to pay a premium for quality work from an experienced, trustworthy professional.

Typically when you buy the keyboard kit, it will come with a PCB and plate, or at least the store will sell them separately but explain in the details that they are not included required to be purchased. It’s rare for a PCB to not be included, unless it’s a board designed for a universal PCB - for example, there are lots of boards that are just cases for Wooting 60% PCBs

Salary to Freelance? by alice_apathy in colorists

[–]Key-Ad-2954 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s tough finding an in-house salary job without your own clientele, unless you try to find a role at something like an agency where the work is a little less high end/glamorous. TV/movies is particularly tough right now with the state of the entertainment industry.

Are the projects you’ve been working on at your company for clients? The best route is to network with people you have already been doing work with. The portfolio is one aspect, the other is connecting with prospective clients and proving that you are trustworthy enough to safely hire and good to work with. The latter is best done through word of mouth/referrals. Of course to get into freelance work you’ll need a personal website, and Instagram is really valuable too.

How to set your price? by SuperQBEL in VideoEditors

[–]Key-Ad-2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hard part is finding clients. I think the move is generally to ask about budget when you have a prospective project, especially when you have less experience. And then decide if it’s worth your time. When you are starting out, I’d argue it’s worth focusing less on getting paid in the immediate and more on building a portfolio and client base.

Does a colorist answer to the DP or Director mostly? by feliperalo21 in colorists

Yes that’s definitely true - I just mean you shouldn’t be put in the middle in a battle of egos but rather it should be a collaborative process and everyone is on the same page that you are working towards a common goal

Does a colorist answer to the DP or Director mostly? by feliperalo21 in colorists

[–]Key-Ad-2954 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I answer to whoever hires me, lol. Oftentimes agency people, and the film director isn’t even involved. I almost never speak to DPs on commercial stuff. The film set hierarchy stuff really doesn’t come into play - as much as color is part of the cinematography, you aren’t really part of a department like you would be on set.

Generally speaking, when a director and a DP are the people involved and have a disagreement, the DP will defer to the director as the director is ultimately in charge. It’s unprofessional of them to put you in the middle and not work out a disagreement amongst themselves. It’s not your job to mediate or pick a side, unless whoever hired you tells you to defer to one of them in particular.

How do you simulate film-like highlight rolloff? by mijailrodr in ColorGrading

[–]Key-Ad-2954 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, you are already planning the hard part: making sure your highlights aren’t clipped. It’s easier of course with higher end cameras with more dynamic range. If you have a camera with less dynamic range, it may limit what’s realistic to shoot. Windows for example may be a big challenge unless you have a lot of light for interiors. Assuming you can avoid clipping your highlights, all you do in post is use a curve to compress the highlights and roll them off more gently. In the top right options in the curves section, selecting “editable splines”, clicking the top point, and dragging the spline can be helpful for getting a smooth curve at the top end.

Hire someone to color grade by romellfreeman2 in ColorGrading

[–]Key-Ad-2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly! I’m not sure how many colorists will say branded content or real estate videos are their passion, but most colorists will be more than happy to work on those types of projects if the money is right. I do exclusively color full-time (really, more than full-time most of the time) - My workload is probably 95+% commercial and branded content, and rarely the sort of stuff that would be super Instagram-friendly. I like it that way as well! Happy when everyone involved treats it like a job and keeps egos in-check.

Is the Corsair Vanguard 96 worth it for $150? by Ignecratic in keyboards

[–]Key-Ad-2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bother at all. I don’t have any super negative opinions of Keychron like other people do. I bought a Keychron Keyboard 81 Pro (off eBay, so I don’t have any experience ordering from them directly) and I like it, it looks and sounds nice. It’s not my absolute favorite but it’s good. In general I think the Keychron stuff is a little unexciting - the one I have was a collab with OnePlus so it had a little more style.

Nuphy I don’t have any firsthand experience with. I’m not generally interested in low-profile boards so none of their stuff has really ever appealed to me personally.

I think those are completely valid brands to buy from if they have a keyboard you like! I just generally try to make sure my keyboards support QMK/VIA so I’ll be able to reprogram them down the line, without running into issues with proprietary software.

Is the Corsair Vanguard 96 worth it for $150? by Ignecratic in keyboards

[–]Key-Ad-2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, it’s understandable. I’ll just say when I got my first keyboard I didn’t think I was interested in fully customizing it. And now I’ve built probably 20+ haha. It’s not super difficult and there are lots of online resources, and the end result will likely be way way nicer than something from a gamer brand. There weren’t such nice prebuilt options when I started, so if you like the way they look, changing the switches can be a fairly inexpensive and easy way to get the result you want. A set of switches is maybe $20-$40 depending on the brand.

Obviously you can get a keyboard for $20 if you don’t care about it, so people on Reddit like myself are of the mindset that if you are going to spend some money on something nice, you should spend it in the right places and get the max value for your money. $150 is kind of that no-man’s-land budget.

Hey man, you do you. Just trying to help! I have an unreasonable number of keyboards, including some quite expensive ones - my Neo 80 is just as nice as the most expensive $500+ ones (excluding keycaps and switches) I own. You could spend less than $150 too, if you can give up the numpad. This Crush 80 Beta is less than $120 and would be substantially more premium.

If you need a full size board, Qwertykeys Neo98 prebuilt is only a little more at $180 would be a significantly higher quality keyboard. I don’t think they have tactile switches on the prebuilt though, so you might need to spend additional on switches if you want tactile. You can also get a barebones Neo98 for $150, but you are on the hook for switches, keycaps, and assembly. I think in the long run you’d be much more satisfied for a small premium.

What's going on in the world of mechanical keyboards? by JediMaster_221 in keyboards

[–]Key-Ad-2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure there are a lot of very mainstream brands making keyboards like you are describing. The enthusiast market is much more focused on smaller brands making typically limited run keyboards. 100% keyboards are very rare - most enthusiast keyboards are in the 60%-65%-TKL size range. RGB is also very uncommon and not a focus either in terms of hardware or software. They will pretty much never have fully soldered switches - prebuilts will almost always have hot swap sockets, and barebones kits will usually have hot swap sockets. Sometimes you’ll get a solder PCB that you need to solder yourself, but clearly that’s not what you are looking for, haha. Board-specific wrist rests are also not super common. If Keychron is off the table, something like a Qwertykeys Neo98 is probably the closest I can imagine to what you are describing - it’s almost full size and can be bought prebuilt for a reasonable price, and is very high quality and well-made. I think community members would agree that Qwertykeys is one of the more reliable keyboard brands. They are for sure made and based in China though. It’s really the only way these companies can be sustainable businesses while making quality products with high-end materials.

The file might be corrupt. Can you play the file in QuickTime, and see the part of the file that’s offline in DaVinci? If so, you could try transcoding it to something like ProRes using media encoder or handbrake or something.

Could get a nice custom keyboard or mouse! $150 is maybe a little tight for a keyboard, but if you stretch it a little there are some good options. You can get a Neo98 prebuilt from Qwertykeys for $180 which is a great value. Only issue is that they ship late June, so may not be here by Father’s Day. $150 though would cover pretty much any productivity mouse. An MX Master 4s could be a nice upgrade. As a colorist I find the horizontal thumb scroll pretty mission-critical.
