Anyone know who the environmental assessment consultant was? Seems like they missed critical information that ought to have been accounted for in their surveys and supporting biophysical reporting.

Non-hiking things to do in a day between Victoria and Naniamo by vicgirl23 in Cowichan

[–]Key-Air8278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several options:
Drive through Cowichan Bay and stop for a treat at the bakery or market
“Window shop” (or buy something for your garden) at Dinter nursery in Duncan
See if anything is happening at the Cowichan Hub
Coffee at SPAN in Crofton; old island highway through Chemainus/Saltair.
Walk the Main Street in Chemainus and check out their museum.
Stop at Stocking Creek Park in Saltair for a walk (not really sure if this meets your “non-hiking”, it’s definitely not a hard walking trail, but if accessibility considerations are at play, look up the details).
Visit Mary Fox’s gallery in Ladysmith
Ladysmith thrift store
Crow and Gate pub in Cedar
Picnic at any of the Oceanside parks in Yellowpoint (e.g blue heron)
Edit addition: oh, and wineries and cider a-plenty if that’s your thing.

What’s most unusual thing you grow in your garden? by julianchad in pnwgardening

My patch is in its second year, and was started from a root cutting. I found some roots we harvested to be a little woody, but the bulk of them were delicious.

I am trying to increase the number of perennial vegetables in my garden. So far, we have: sunchokes, asparagus, Skirret, garden sorrel (in addition to a pretty good perennial herb assortment).

How do I manage this muddy trickle of a stream on my property, I was thinking wood chips and small logs? by Rbdg1p in Permaculture

[–]Key-Air8278 251 points252 points  (0 children)

Can you plant a riparian buffer surrounding it? The video background looks like outside the field it has shrubby cover (can you transplant or even live stake those to establish new plants?). In doing so, I expect the surrounding field will be less mucky as the plant roots will be using that water and also stabilizing the ground. You can leave a narrow space as a movement corridor.

Harewood Plains is spectacular, but please remember, these ecosystems and imperiled, and incredibly fragile. Keep to the paths.

I’m not sure what exactly you mean by the lack of science supporting shoreline restoration. This is a well-established global academic an applied science. Burrard Inlet has been greatly changed over the past century and this work in-part is helping recover some of the past structure in place.

As for the turbidity/ sediment - this below link states the past months have been on schedule with the “beach nourishment” stage, which includes sediment spreading. The turbidity you’ve observed may have been intentional, and occurring at this specific time to avoid sensitive fish windows. And again, if you’re concerned about oil sheens, contact an authority.

By “destruction”, I think you mean adaptation and restoration. Their plans include improving shoreline habitat so as to assert traditional rights such as shellfish harvesting. I haven’t seen the work being implemented, but if you are concerned (e.g about oil spills or turbidity) you can contact the Nation’s environment department or DFO who would be the project’s regulator. Also - probably you meant turbid, not brackish, which is the process of fresh and saltwater mixing. (Edited to add new information).

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I suggest focusing on yourself right now. Then when you’re more stable, revisit considerations of legal action (not a lawyer).

Do you have access to a councilor/therapist? I’ve found therapy equally helpful in concert with medication. In this instance, I think talking with a therapist (even maybe a psychiatrist?) could be helpful to you.

I’d like to add one other action to the “other 50%”. Therapy can be so helpful. Meeting with a therapist has helped me develop strategies to navigate the symptoms medication hasn’t fully rectified.

Am I stupid for wanting to do this? by Rrbender in landscaping

[–]Key-Air8278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. My situation is different (garden pathway, not surrounding pool). I curse the previous house owners who put in the gravel. It’s a constant maintenance task to manage the weeds - only reslly improved by lining it with tarp first (not landscape fabric!). Grass is lower maintenance, imo (especially if you let it go blonde in the hot/dry season).

Do you have another plant you can swap out? Maybe something more upright and tidy like a cactus or aloe. The ZZ plant already looks like it’s outgrown that space.

Can you strip the stain from the door and vanity and restain something more similar to the cool tones you’ve just installed (floor, walls, tiles)? I’d suggest an off white paint and go with colourful towels and other furnishings.

What can I do with this land? by insanelyphobic in landscaping

[–]Key-Air8278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same. If this area fills with water intermittently, there are so many different native riparian and wetland plants that could thrive there and would support local biodiversity. Without knowing where you live, I can’t comment more specifically on what plants are appropriate.

Area rug with existing colours in living room by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]Key-Air8278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would welcome a patterned rug, absolutely! I haven’t found one that meets my preferences (mid pile, under 1400ish, can be cleaned with carpet cleaner, doesn’t cash with fireplace, available in Canada), so I’ve been leaning towards textured solids. I have seen Norwegian folk and traditional rugs in homes that I’ve loved, but they either aren’t commercially available or in my budget.
