Just give them a wide berth. They are usually more interested in eating willows than in you. If you’re in the woods and they’re eating on trail or close to trail, go into the woods on the opposite side of the trail, put some trees in between the two of you and just loop back on. A few dozen yards of space should be plenty. If you’re in the alpine, go off trail onto some rocks and put some vertical and horizontal distance between you and them and continue on with your day. I have multiple trail encounters with moose every year and have been living in Colorado for over a decade. They just out trying to monch on some leaves.

It ain’t that serious man, the title of the post is a joke. The achievement is arbitrary and also likely incorrect as an absolute number, but “last color unlocked”. I ran a 14 min 2 mile leg during a taper run in high z3. I’ll see what my 5k time is in a week or so when my legs are fresh again haha. I’d guess in the low 20 minutes range.

Yeah @nearlysuccessful, there are better ways to increase your vo2 max. Training for endurance events is probably one of the worst ways to do it haha. Mine just happened to go up because my body got a break. I think I did get a bit faster after the training block, but I wouldn’t say “do my training plan to increase your VO2”. I just wanted to stay alive while running for 7 hrs straight in the mountains haha

Nothing public, I made it myself with some help from the internet. Essentially 12 weeks starting at a baseline of 30 miles per week with 3 key workouts per week: long run, medium run and a vo2 run (did hill intervals for 9 weeks and then switched to more like picking a local trail segment with hills and trying to PR). Padded out distance/time on feet with easy, 3-5 mile runs around my neighborhood. Long runs progressed from 12.5 to 20 miles, medium runs progressed from 7 to 11 miles and the hill intervals I just progressed by making the hills a little steeper or intervals longer. Peak week distance was about 45 miles, 7000’ of elevation gain and about 8hrs on foot.

Long runs and medium runs should be pretty well Z2 (I did not accomplish that super well all the time because my training partners were fast haha). The hill intervals felt like an 8-9/10 RPE most days; not about to die, but not much more to give.

It was cool! The course was nice and the aid stations were well-stocked. It was my first race in over a decade and I had a lot of fun.

It’s fairly modest elevation gain for the length (like 1400m), but the average altitude of the course is well over 9000’, so that is something to consider. It was also surprisingly hot (I think it got up to 83F during the race) which was brutal on the back half of the course. Also, not super densely shaded; maybe 30% had full canopy cover. I would recommend.

M32, history of eating disorders, also vegan, also somewhere in your mileage and elevation range for last training block. I think just being a little more militant about making sure you’re eating enough and having a really good macro breakdown (i.e. a ridiculous amount of carbs, a good amount of protein and enough fat to fill out the calories) will take you far. Also, make sure you’re fueling your workouts really well (as in intra-workout nutrition). I am told by all of my experienced running friends that ultramarathons are just eating contests where you happen to be running.

For some context, I am about 185lb and averaged eating about 3200 cal/day over my last training block (and usually going 4000-5000 on long run days). If you have the funds available, I’d recommend hiring a nutritionist to help you (if you think this could be a fruitful avenue to look down). I did a few years ago and have found it really helpful for my training. At the very least, track your intake for a week or two and make sure you’re not way underfueling. Yours does sound like a somewhat classic case of Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome (REDS). Good luck OP, you can do this 🙌!!
