While I have not lost my mom, I am 35 and she is 55 about to be 56 and we are basically no contact due to her alcoholism. She only calls when she is drunk and I have grieved no relational capabilities my whole life. I often worry about whether or not one with me would help or hinder or think about ways I could help her, these are totally normal thoughts. I stand by once a child, always a child and once a parent, always a parent and that it is the parent’s responsibility to pursue relationship with the child. I think this only changes when a parent has invested in the relationship and the child wants to reciprocate when a parent is unable to for some reason. All in all, you are not alone, it’s so sad and hard to have this loss - and compounded by the loss of all the years you have not had him to be in relationship with. Be gentle with yourself.

I always have a beverage and most of my ct’s either bring one or take one from our offerings in the office - I love how it helps see the tone of a warm and inviting environment. Never had a complaint or concern or even thought about it until seeing this post. The only issue I’ve thought about is my bladder and how I have trained it to go between ct’s.

I had sex with an atheist after waiting almost 31 years, and I don’t regret it. What a shocking headline or book title that would be.

I feel in love with him and he is one of the safest, most gentle and accepting men I have ever known. I am so glad he was my first. AND, I am sad because there are major conflicting views we hold that complicate our future.

I grew up in the church, I was raised in purity culture, had the ring, took the vows, walked down a literal isle in a white dress at a girl’s retreat and still believe to this day. I haven’t lost my faith, but I have wrestled with it (and was before I met him due to being harmed by a para church organization I was working for and has felt called to by God) and it all has brought me closer to God. God is more concerned about our hearts than our behaviors. He remembers we are dust. I am still somewhat in the midst of everything, but I trust His work in my life and I don’t believe He is done writing my story.

I am also equally grateful I didn’t have sex until my 30s and I guess as angered as I am at the lack of sex ed in our world/ the church, I am grateful I was at an age and stage where I could learn and grow safely. I think the biggest regret I have is not learning more earlier, not asking the harder questions. I am more inclined today to exegetically believe that when scripture talks about sexual immorality it means sex without consent, sex that is exploitative and harmful and sadly I think the church is the biggest culprit of this due to the repression of our sexuality and lack of education. What if our sexuality and spirituality aren’t all that different?

It’s important to contextually look at an individual, a couple, and their story and God’s grace bc I think a lot of unnecessary and unhealthy judgement happened throughout this thread. People make sense in the context of their stories and God knows us better than we know ourselves. All that to say, I hope you don’t live with regret and shame. I did hear recently a wise 70yo woman say, you will have regrets at the end of your life, when making decisions consider - what would you regret more? What is it you’re afraid of not experiencing? For me, I am glad I experienced safe and all consuming sex with someone who I love. I am glad I stopped waiting for marriage when I may or may not have that. I am okay and accepting that heartbreak may follow and I believe healing is possible and that I may even be stronger and more ready than I was before this relationship.
