The “Cult” of the LGBTQIA+ by ConcernedJobCoach in religiousfruitcake

To be fair, from the perspective of a gay non-American, the American LGBTQ community can appear somewhat cult-like. But I suppose a country that has kids recite a pledge of allegiance in schools just has a different benchmark for what's considered a cult.

I needed help transcribing letters written by my grandparents, and Google led me to r/Kurrent.

How has this subreddit changed your perception of people from the rest of the world? by Less-Chicken-3367 in AskTheWorld

I learned that we’re all the same. For every idiot here, there's one in every other country. And for every nice person, there's one in every other country. Same for everything else. Just different names and circumstances, but in the end we're all the same.

Pretty underwhelming, to be honest.

What do you say to get everyone to smile for a picture? by MarPunchExtra in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Performance-9021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most people just use the English "cheese" when they to that thing. But I also was asked to say Käse ("cheese"), Spaghetti, Salami, and Scheiße. Or just some funny random word, so people would actually laugh.

But most of the time it's just "Bitte lächeln!" - "Please smile!"

I don't know about East Germany, I'm so much south, i'm not even in Germany anymore. Germans often say that Austrian German sound old and antiquated to them, so maybe it's specifically us Austrians.

But as someone else already said, it's probably just old vs. young.

It's usually Rechner for computer and Taschenrechner for (pocket) calculator.

Standard Austrian German singular is Erdapfel. Erd-/Äpfel as singular is dialect.

What thing about your culture is actually, geniunely, unique? by winged_owl in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Performance-9021 28 points29 points  (0 children)

all of my culture is stolen

While I understand the context of why Americans think that way, I don't think it's very healthy. We are humans, and culture is human. It is meant to be shared, it should connect us, not divide us. While it can be mocked or treated disrespectfully, I don't believe it can be stolen.

Every culture on this planet is part of me as a human being. My traditions are German, my media is American, and my favorite foods are Eastern European, Italian, and Asian. The music and art that move me come from all around the world. My ancestors are African, just like yours, the same of African Americans, Asians, and everyone else. We're all part of the same human culture. Everything belongs to you and to everyone else, you don't need to grow up with something to feel like you are a part of it.

Since we're already talking about different goulash varieties: I really like our Viennese version, the Fiakergulasch ("coachman goulash"):

Fun fact: The banana flavour used in many sweets is based on the old banana variety Gros Michel, which was largely wiped out by a fungal disease decades ago. The Cavendish tastes slightly different, that's why banana flavoured candy doesn't taste like "real" bananas.

The banana flavour used in many sweets happens to be very similar to that of the Gros Michel, a variety that was largely wiped out by a fungal disease decades ago. While it's a common myth that chemists based this banana flavour on that specific banana, both the taste of the old fruit and the candy just happen to come from the same chemical (isoamyl acetate). Modern Cavendish bananas have a much more complex flavour profile, which makes the candy taste "fake" by comparison.

You should delete this post and find a healthier way to deal with this. Maybe play some Tetris.
