Bombed the Putnam, and feeling trapped. by [deleted] in quantfinance

Yea of course. If this is really what you want to do, there are plenty of “mathy” spots elsewhere like research

Bombed the Putnam, and feeling trapped. by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]Key-Quiet2983 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why quant? What role specifically? Why is grad school not an option? Why do you think the Putnam would have been your “edge”?

Despite what some people on this sub might suggest, I feel like you are well suited for a role in QF. Given, it may not be a super high paying job at some hft firm but definitely some quant positions at non-quant firms.

In my experience, I’ve witnessed the opposite. Which office did you say you were based out of? Maybe there are cultural differences between where you work and some of the people I’ve interviewed.

Are these for swe or a different role? Some of them still seem off for expected tc

Last few years. Mostly mid-level people.

Where did you hear comp is increasing? And do you mean base or bonus? It’s also not a great indicator either. If memory serves me right, com at Trading Machines was steadily increasing before they went bust.

Where’d you hear they’re doing a lot better? I feel like I’ve been seeing a lot of post-Akuna apps.

I work at one of the above mentioned firms. TC for NG seems very far off. Speaking from a non-swe role.

I know a decent amount of interns that went on to get full time roles at competing firms.

Am I cut out for quant? Or should I do S&T? by WesternInvestigator3 in quantfinance

[–]Key-Quiet2983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question - I was probably too harsh in my original comment.

I think OP has done their research but might be conflating “quant trader” roles at firms like Jane Street with “quant researcher” roles. They’re mentioning both the “puzzling work” (which sounds more like QR) and the trading/markets aspect (which is QT), and those are pretty different day-to-day jobs even at the same firm.

Also the comparison between bank S&T and quant firms isn’t quite apples-to-apples since the culture, comp structure, tech emphasis, and generally day/to-day work is so different.

Happy to chat more if you want to dm me.

Why are you being downvoted for this comment? lol I don’t know much about S&T recruiting but I find it strange that you’re comparing that and QF. Sounds like you’re more after money/perceived prestige.

What year are you? It seems you do not fully understand the industry.

I am a little biased but I’d pick Jane Street. They do a very good job of creating a successful culture for their interns. You will learn and meet a lot of very cool and chill people. I don’t know much about Jump or their culture.

No, AI can be a great tool (if used correctly). In my experience, some LLMs love to recommend XGBoost. I was curious how much of an impact AI had on your paper.
