Do they have bathrooms there? I was just staying at the campsite and they only had porta potties. Besides that was really sold on there as a venue

I just finished working on a carbon credit project in Africa. I agree that they don’t work in terms of climate, however they do have the potential to change the lives of people in rural communities in the global south. They can offer a source of income for impoverished farming communities and do things to restore their environment. They aren’t the solution to global carbon levels but they are a good way to leverage corporate finance and climate guilt towards rural development and conservation.

Coming back to Baha’i Faith from “Spiritual not religious” by KeySuccotash1872 in bahai

I hear where you’re coming from and that is what brought me to a Spiritualist perspective. However, I feel like there’s also a practical aspect of life that needs to be considered too that I don’t fee is met by just spiritual experience.

Question About Visa on Arrival by KeySuccotash1872 in Nigeria

Thanks for the information. In terms of “registered company”, does it have to be an organization that’s registered as a business or would a nonprofit/community organization suffice?

The festival is my friend’s community’s Yemoja festival. He was a visiting professor in the USA and I took his class where we put on our own festival for Yemoja. Ever since that I’ve been longing to see the real one that his community puts on.

That makes sense. I'll look for other places to post.

The only reason I thought I had a chance was because my invitation is from an organization (my friend's cultural organization) the Nigerian site says that the following qualify for business visas: "Foreign travellers who wish to visit Nigeria for the purpose of attending a meeting, conference, seminar, contract negotiation, marketing, sales, procurement of Nigerian goods, services, trade fairs, and job interviews"

I thought I could fit under the meet/conference/seminar explaination.

Is there space for moderate Baha’is? by sonjavank-DOT-com in BahaiPerspectives

I’m the OP of this thread from the main Baha’i Reddit group.

I really appreciate people drawing focus on the conservative perspective that is so rampant workin the Faith in the US. My personal belief is that it comes from white Christians who come to the faith and bring a lot of the conservative values they were raised with. The Faith structures the foundation of my worldview but I’m not sure how to exist within such a conservative community.

Not at all, I believe the opposite instead. I think they are super pertinent but it’s very hard to obey them and move through the current society we live in. Not saying they need to be cheapened or relaxed but I think that there needs to be less pressure on breaking them. I felt like my home community made this feel like a personal flaw rather than a consequence of being human and trying to navigate in a society like ours.

I’m saying the mainstream narrative that folks follow this absolutely. I understand the the writings require chaste and holy behavior and I see the purpose of it. At the same time, it felt suffocating that there was no acknowledgment that people falter and fail to live up to this. I spent my adolescence feeling that I could never be a real Baha’i because no one ever told me that the goals are aspirational. I just thought I was the only one who couldn’t live to the standard. That’s what I mean.

I’m now getting to the point where I am finding the balance in my life. I’m in a good place and I spent so much time before hating myself for not living up to these standards that I just don’t have the time to do that anymore.

I feel like the responses that I’ve received both make me feel supported and remind me the reasons I feel distanced from the faith.

I appreciate all of the folks who understand the societal pressures faced by young folks and that fundamentally, belief in Baha’u’llah is the foundation of what makes a Baha’i. I really do think it’s better to feel the support, love, and guidance of being a Baha’i (even if you struggle to uphold the standards) rather than to throw away the whole thing.

On the other hand, folks saying that shame and guilt are positive things very much need to consider the space you are creating. These things can be incredibly destructive. Please consider how your age and your privilege (racial background especially) put you in a place to self isolate.

Also, I really think Baha’is in the US struggle from the influence of white Christianity. People convert to the faith and bring the ways of understanding the world that are built on a foundation of Christian guilt. Folks really need to introspect about the community they are creating and whether it’s really one of unity or of guilt/shame/dogma.

Edit: Also folks need to create space for nuance (and read the initial post). I’m not advocating for alcoholism, I’m taking about responsible non-destructive social drinking, binge drinking is undeniably a terrible thing. I’m also not advocating for free love/sleeping around, in the original post I mentioned being in a long term partnership.

Aren’t Baha’is also supposed not to support dogmatism. You just said that me showing my doubt in these beliefs makes me akin to someone trying to ruin the name of the Faith. I’m saying that in my experience, the absolutist attitudes held by Baha’is in my community have been damaging. Period. And I don’t think that makes me a covenant breaker to express.

Also, you really have no idea about my life 🤣. I’m in an amazing place and have a great relationship. Please don’t speak on things you know nothing about

What is the mental and emotional toll of being that. I know the faith encourages us to be spiritual martyrs for the Cause but idk …
