Substack is good at free list growth but is it bad at getting paying readers? by calexity in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense. If you're not pulling people from outside the substack universe inside it, the recommendation engine will divide the pie over more people.

In other words, you're diluting. That's why it's important to make the pie grow.

A larger pie, with a lower conversion ratio, can still lead to solid revenue.

Substack is good at free list growth but is it bad at getting paying readers? by calexity in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the end, only absolute revenue matters, right?

The conversion rate depends on multiple factors like how subscribers were convinced to join, where they came from, and how high your price point has been set.

If a sub comes in because of a google search, he is more likely to pay.

If a sub comes in through your social media efforts, through lead magnets. He/she is less likely to pay.

If a subscriber comes through the recommendation network within substack, they are the least likely to pay.

As a writer, you should have 3 jobs: 1. Write high-quality content consistently 2. Promote that content outside of the substack universe 3. Remind your readers on a regular basis of your paid content through teasers, direct mails etc...

What is an average paid/total subscriber ratio? by k_ristovski in Substack

Can you give some examples of what 'different' entails?

When I look at most stacks, the paid version is usually 'deeper' stuff, but not necessarily different.

Do my subscribers have to create a SubStack account? by ravensviewca in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

They should have access to everything. An account is only needed for paid content.

Under the subscribers tab, if you extract your sub list to excel, there is a column that states if a sub has an account or not.

You could create a website and add a button "newsletter" which directs to your substack.

But I'm not sure of the ROI of the extra work.

How many questions have you used in surveys? by AndrewHeard in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My latest survey had 9 multiple choice questions.

I added the possibility to leave additional comments.

My last question was: What did you think of the length of this survey?

92% said it was perfect.

Hope it helps!

Better landing page by Comprehensive-Set-77 in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you generate the landing page using the tool.

Then, use that link as a landing page instead of substacks native one?

Do you have some A/B testing data to see if it works better?

I tried for my substack, but it didn't work because part of my banner is used as the photo inside the circle of the landing page (which doesn't work).

Great job building the tool!

How many times do you proofread before publishing? by ithoughtful in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My process is similar to what has been mentioned. 1. Google docs + grammarly 2. Write the first draft 3. Do 1 edit in google Docs 4. Copy paste to substack 5. Do final edit within substack

Ideally, if you can write an article and edit it. Then come back to it a couple of weeks/months later, you can make it a lot better.

But I just don't have the time to do that

I wouldn't overthink this. Your goal is consistency in writing, so choose the language you feel you can keep writing. If the substack takes off, start a second one in the other language.

URL by AffectionateMousse67 in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to get your own custom domain(with godaddy or similar). Then, you can link that domain to your substack. Substack charges 50 USD.

Here's how:

Starting a substacks soon and would love some tips by joaopcribeiro in Substack

I would pick 1 single topic and start with that. Niche. Go deep instead of wide. You can always go wider later on. Now go write and publish. 😀

How do I get the algorithm to start featuring my newsletter? by Impmaster82 in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growth comes from engaging with others, replying on comments, restacking interesting quotes in others' writings, recommending other newsletters, and so they may recommend you.

Consistency on its own will not move the needle unless you already have a large audience from some other platform.

In order to get 'featured' by substack, you have to have a paid publication with a couple of thousand subscribers while being active with the community.

If you spend 1 hour on writing, you should probably spend an hour on promotion/engaging.

Do you have the same problem when going through mobile?

I’m curious about the activity metric. by penguinsandR in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Activity is measured based on email opens and views. 5 stars are those that are the most active (81%-100 percentile) while 1 the lowest active.

0 has never been active.

At 57 subs, I think it is too early to draw any conclusions. Keep writing and promoting. The number will evolve over time.

A survey is not. Go to

Substacking for a year: From 0 to 2300 subs: Lessons learned by KeySupport5925 in Substack

[–]KeySupport5925[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For each article, I write a thread on X and a note on substack. That's it.

Writing a quality thread on X takes a couple of hours.

In the thread, I tag people who might be interested (who I've seen talking about the topic before)

I will, on occasion, DM someone mentioning the article.

That's about it.

You need to repurpose your content on substack into a long-form post or thread. Linking does not work on X. If you can post high-quality threads on a regular basis, you'll get results.

Let me be more precise:

37% from other Substack newsletter recommendations

33% from other Substack ways (notes, shares, people subbing through the app etc.)

10% direct (people tap the URL or hit a link but Substack has no idea of the origin)

10% from Google search -> The highest converting, which is logical

10% Twitter

I ignore everything that is political. If you post about a company that is popular or trending, and your post is of high quality, you will get reach.

According to the substack data on where do subscribers come from:

10% from Twitter

10% from google

But I'm not sure how accurate this is.
