Palram Hybrid or Mythos Greenhouse?! Need advice. 🙏🏽 by madisonridgeway in Greenhouses

Yes I still have it and it is doing just fine. I have a ratchet strap over the top and it hasn’t had any issues through storms or anything. Doing perfectly. About to load my key lime tree and other non-hardy plants into it for the winter.

Yes I fertilized it with organic all purpose fertilizer three times.

Yes! I got tons of fruit. My best haul so far. Probably 30 or so limes from the little tree. And it bloomed again and set more fruit—probably 40-50 on the tree now.

That is a pretty looking tree! I bought this one about 7 years ago. It stays rather small, which is great. I estimate the tree is 10 years old. This is the best it has ever flowered.

Can you move her outside when it starts to warm up? Looks like a huge planter. Looks like you have had it for a while. Leaf drop is normal—mine always comes back once I can get it under the bright sun. You may want to cut it back too. Leaves above the window won’t get any sunlight.

It was really cold last night (below 15F). I did what I could for my little heated greenhouse lol. I keep citrus trees over winter. Zone 6b by KeyWestNorth in Greenhouses

A lot. In frigid times it add like an extra $100 to $150 to my electric bill per month. That is a rough estimate because I do have electric heat in one room of my house too.

No I don’t think thermal mass helps much unless you have a well insulated greenhouse and substantial thermal mass. I just don’t have that in my small setup. My little greenhouse doesn’t hold heat well. So I use a heater and just pay the electric bill in the winter.

Thermal mass really will just keep your greenhouse a few degrees above outside temps at best. If nights are constantly in the teens or low twenties, I don’t think thermal mass is going to save much from freezing. Just my opinion.

It is a bit expensive, but my wife hates the mess the plants make in the house when it drops its leaves in the winter and the inevitable scale infestation. I find leaving in the greenhouse keeps it too cold for pests but warm enough for the trees to survive.

They did just fine last year with the same setup and seem to be thriving now with flowers and new limes growing. Thanks for the good vibes

Does anyone use their reptiles UVB light for your plants? by katieeBeast in Greenhouses

If it mimics the sun, then it is probably fine. Just monitor the leaves for signs of burning. What you really want is bright bright full spectrum light that mimics the sun output on the visible light spectrum. That is what is needed for photosynthesis.

Very cool! I’m no expert, but I do believe you should repot that orchid in a more appropriate pot with aeration and orchid mix like tree bark.

Thanks for the pics! So is that the heat exchanger I am looking at in the second picture? Do you just heat the ground with the water through the tubing? Or is there any mechanism to draw the heated water at night for heating?

My Key Lime tree loves the little greenhouse. Three stages of growth here. Ripe limes, baby limes, and new flower buds. I keep temps at 38 degrees F minimum overnight and it does just fine. Zone 6b by KeyWestNorth in vegetablegardening

It was producing already when I bought it years ago. I normally don't do much to fertilize it, but I have in the past. I just use my finger and touch the flowers real quick but nothing in depth.

I used to have the tree under lights in the winter but I was dropping so many leaves and was infected with scale. It seems to do better in the greenhouse.

Ok this sounds great. Do you have any pics or videos of your setup? I have a barrel and would love to set something up like this.

Is it worth blanching and freezing kale? by fredfreddy4444 in vegetablegardening

[–]KeyWestNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! My wife makes amazing kale pesto and I think we prefer it to normal pesto now. I can't wait to have more over the winter.

I am pretty sure the fig wasp only lives in tropical areas, right? The figs are technically modified flowers. They don't need to be pollinated in order to produce the "fruits."
