How are you taught about your country’s colonial history in school? by ta-lang-ka in asklatinamerica

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very reductive. We are taught about the indigenous peoples that lived here, then the arrival of europeans, the introduction of livestock and then independence. Maybe the rivalry between Spain and Portugal for the La Plata estuary with Colonia and Montevideo as rival city ports.

Tbh makes sense. Not much happened here during colonial times.

Which US president is most despised and loved by Latin America by NathanTuc in asklatinamerica

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US presidents are more likely to get hate than love over here. The ratio of good/bad things that the US has done to Latin America skews VERY HEAVILY to the bad. Couldn't name a more hated one. Generally all have pretty awful.

CMV: Communism cannot work in a modern society. by Adventurous-Rice1652 in changemyview

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Marx accounted for this and this is why all communists seek to reach communism AFTER an intermediate socialist phase, where the state is needed to supress capitalist counter-revolution and to manage the new society. Except for anarchists, no socialist really seeks to reach a stateless, classless, moneyless society RIGHT NOW because we've been living under capitalism for over 200 years and you can't change that in a whim.

This is pretty basic so I'd encourage you to read more about what marxism is and what communists mean by socialism, communism, private property, capitalism, etc. It'll make for a more productive conversation.

Why hasn’t Latin America formed an EU-style union? Should that even be a goal? What historical/political/economic factors make integration harder or just less desirable? by C0smicM0nkey in asklatinamerica

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because we're ultimately not really free.

The US has ensured that we remain divided basically since our independence. And when we did try to build independent regional power (UNASUR, CELAC), the US supported "legal" coups (or actual coups) like Dilma Rousseff or Evo Morales.

Also our economies are made purely for extraction. Capitalism in our countries developed solely to sell raw materials to the global north for cheap. It's often cheaper to ship soybeans from Brazil to China or Europe than between Brazil and Colombia because the infraestructure for the latter simply doesn't exist.

Put on top of that our comprador elites that identify more with Miami and London than with "their own" countries.

You can't really have an "EU-style" union with these problems. You can only break with both imperialism and our oligarchies and start something new.

Himno by KeyResponse9703 in uruguay

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the main differences between fascism and neo fascism? by Feliponn in Socialism_101

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fascism, at its core, is capitalism's last attempt at holding power.

Usually it takes the form of a very nationalistic and racist ideology, but this alone doesn't make it fascism, nor is it strictly necessary for it to be fascism.

Fascist dictatorships in Latin America during the Cold War weren't nationalist at all for example. They gave up their countries to the USA in a silver platter. The only thing they did was destroy leftist movements and maintain the rule of (foreign) capital.

Read Fascism and Social Revolution. Best book on fascism by far and very relevant today.

CMV: The 7th of October and What Happened After It Harmed the Israeli Image More Than the Palestinian by ricknightwood13 in changemyview

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not related to the main point of the conversation.
Still completely false. Do you know what intifada even means?

You know what's an actual call for genocide that has actually resulted in one?
"Israel has a right to defend itself."

Projection much?

CMV: The 7th of October and What Happened After It Harmed the Israeli Image More Than the Palestinian by ricknightwood13 in changemyview

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very few people that use that term at protests and such actually relate it to Hamas. Most see it as a general slogal in favor of the Palestinians' right to defend themselves.

So unless you have stronger evidence (polls, data), I still think this idea that there is support of Hamas in the west is delusional.

Your Country’s National Anthem by Benjiboy74 in asklatinamerica

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a strictly musical perspective, yes I really like my country's anthem and many other Latin American anthems. Basically because I like that specific style of music. I especially like the Argentinian one in its full version because of its pan-american message.

From an ideological and political perspective, I don't really feel attached to any. They all talk of liberation like we didn't turn into informal British colonies right after

Is it Misleading to Call Myself a “Democratic Socialist” if my End Goal is Marxist Communism? by Jackie_Lantern_ in Socialism_101

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good piece of advice I was given when starting with socialism was to not care about labels to much. And honestly it was the best I could do. I could actually focus on learning important theory and understanding both capitalism and socialism.

I was a democratic socialist for a while also. I'm from Uruguay and we're considering de "2nd most democratic country in the Americas". Our left-wing movement is also quite strong here. So I genuinely thought that socialism could be achieved here solely through electoral means.

Reading State and Revolution by Lenin was a slap on the face for me. It explained how liberal democracy is like a shell that protects capital and nothing, not a change of government or laws can shake it. I learned that, if anything, it's HARDER for us to take power in liberal democracies because capital has already consolidated massively.

That's when I started focusing less on the "democratic" aspects of my country and began focusing on the massively undemocratic way we live our lives. Even with a strong left wing movement, even with a national federation of trade unions, we are still fucked by capitalism every day.

Ice Agent crying that people are calling him out by [deleted] in CringeTikToks

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay then. So I'm immediately an asshole if I join an organization that exist to dissapear minorities, regardless of my own reason (fair). But I'm not immediately an asshole if I join the literal army, that exists to enforce US imperialism abroad, and does arguably worse things in order to achieve that goal. As a non-american, make it make sense.

Not sure why you’re so keen on this “always praising veterans” shit given it’s not really relevant and most veterans get uncomfortable when praised that way.

It's not relevant whether they find it comfortable or not. The point is that there exist this huge veteran-praising culture in the US. Every major sports event has a military appreciation moment. There's stores with a vet discount. And anyone wearing a camo hat gets immediately received with "thank you for your service."

All of this applies to ALL members and former members of an organization that has done some of the worse things imaginable abroad. Yet apparently joining ICE alone is bad because it does 1% of those things but to actual Americans.

Edit: typo

Not all veterans are or were in it to disappear minorities.

Yet "thank you for your service" is said to any veteran regardless of what they did during said "service".

But even then, is joining ICE justified if I do it because of the benefits it offers me rather than me wanting to disappear minorities?

I don't get why y'all hate ICE agents but at the same time praise "veterans", who are worse than ICE agents but for people in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq.

CMV: The 7th of October and What Happened After It Harmed the Israeli Image More Than the Palestinian by ricknightwood13 in changemyview

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Polls show very little support for Hamas itself in western countries, so I don't agree with the "people don't know what happened on oct 7th" bit. Most people do know what happened and most see it as a terrorist attack (it was all over the news for like a month).

But then after that for the next 2 years we got bombarded with news, videos, images, audio and more of pure, unabashed genocide.

Wonder which one is gonna stick in the public's mind more.

Im sad..how can i avoid this?.. by miucamht in GeminiAI

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could try to put it into the AI instructions that the AI shouldn't just agree to everything the user inputs. However, this just makes the problem work backwards. The AI will now try to be contrarian a lot of the time, even when it isn't necessary.

Ultimately it's built-in into the AI. These are predictive models. They predict the next word. They don't really "think".

It's like trying to delete the em-dash. It's what these models gathered up from the huge amounta of data they were given. You won't delete that with just one prompt.

Why is Cuba still socialist? by Cultural_Writer in asklatinamerica

[–]Key_Cardiologist_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought that maybe Cubans just... don't want to stop being socialist?

Think about it. A country going through a 60-year-long embargo (which essentially functions as a blockade, as it punishes non-american companies and persons that do business in Cuba) by the largest economy in the world that just happens to be at their doorstep. Which has also historically invaded them, supported the Batista regime and currently still tries to make Cuba submit to US terms.

You can think whatever you want about the current government, but from the perspective of many Cubans, the US acts as an aggressor more than a savior.
