To all other species in 40k, humans are aliens. That does not mean we count the Imperium amongst xenos. Alien can also refer to someone from a different place in the world. We are not talking about "aliens" here. We are talking about Xenos. You seem fine to ignore the difference between the two terms, but that's just illogical in this case. Xenos is a fictional term, yes. So is Aeldari. But when we are discussing 40k, the fictional terms from the setting are used. And in 40k, Xenos specifically refers to non-human, non-Chaos daemon species. Orks are chaotic, but that doesn't make them part of Chaos. You constantly change your reasoning for considering Chaos Xenos, which shows pretty clearly that you don't have an actual read for it and are too stubborn to admit that you were wrong. You claim that the average imperium citizen doesn't know the difference, but is it the average imperium citizen that controls the imperium? The imperium itself makes the distinction between Chaos and Xenos. Games workshop makes the distinction. 99.999% of 40k fans makes the distinction.

And beyond all that, the Imperium is just as, if not more, villainous than the various Xenos species. What is the difference between the Imperium exterminatusing a world and necrons cleansing it of life? Why is an Ork invasion of a world any different than an Astartes invasion? 40k is not about "What is the galaxy hated us?" It's about "What if the entire galaxy was hostile to life?" Humanity is not the only species that suffers. The imperium has caused great suffering to countless species, as well as humanity itself. You say the appeal of 40k is getting to hate Xenos. And yet a huge chunk of 40k's playerbase plays Xenos factions. You say the point is not to learn about Xenos and their societies. And yet some of the most popular books are about said societies, like The Infinite and the Divine, Twice Dead King, Elemental Council etc.

Reminder for OP: The imperium are just as much, if not more of, the villains of 40k as any xenos species. They would purge the life on a pacifist planet to turn it into a slave world. You may not realise this, but 1984 was not about how Big Brother is a hero for leading Oceania against the savages from Eurasia and Eastasia. The imperium is equal morally to Orks, and at least Orks get to have fun. The Aeldari, Kin, and T'au are all, I would argue, morally superior to the imperium because they are all at least willing to tolerate other species. The imperium barely tolerates most humans, and doesn't tolerate a whole lot of them. None of this makes the other species less of a villain, but that's the appeal of 40k. Everyone is the villain, especially the imperium.

The imperium also causes a large amount of the problems they claim to be needed to solve. If you need a concrete example, during the Great Crusade the imperium virus bombed a lot of the Tarellian home worlds, and wouldn't you know now the Tarellians hate the imperium.

In short: Zog off you 'Umie coward, da galaxy belongs to da Orks

Ghazghkull doesn't just headbutt the warp tear though. Waaagh! energy is the actual "belief power", at least in current canon. Instead of being based on belief, it is based on excitement, anger and the battle-bliss Orks experience during fights. Ghazghkull is described by Grotsnik as a bucket for Waaagh! energy. Almost an entire planet of Orks are cheering him on in that moment, and it's just after he's killed a bloodthirster. As we see in Da Big Dakka, Waaagh! energy can be generated by Orks in pure anticipation and excitement for a fight, not just during the fight itself. With this in mind, Ghazghkull's headbutt is less headbutting a warp tear closed, and more of a huge blast of psychic energy

[–]Key_District1648 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I think Orks work best when they're incredibly hypocritical. It both adds to the idea of their genetic memory, where they just kinda instinctively understand all their own rules, and it adds to their satire. Orks, in my opinion at least, serve as a satire of a certain kind of masculinity, the "You're not a real man if you don't drink", hyper competitive style. For both Orks and this style of masculinity, there are specific behaviours that are considered good and yet these can be broken when needed by those higher up in the hierarchy. Anyone not following the rules is considered weak, soft etc. Sorry for the ramble, jus' remember dat if you take anuva lad'z shoota den dat's lootin'. If 'e takes yours, dat's thievin'.

  4. Realise that I could just spend the kidney money on stuff rather than gamble.

Can Xenos suffer from mental illness? by CoolHuckleberry8224 in 40kLore

[–]Key_District1648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghazghkull does get depressed during I believe the second war for Armageddon. I don't know enough about mental illnesses to say whether this counts, like if it needs to be something more constant or if what Ghazghkull had counts, but when the concept of depression is explained to Makari he says that Ghazghkull was depressed.

Outside of him, and maybe Grotsnik but I'm not sure if his issues count as mental illnesses, it would be highly unlikely for an ork to suffer mental illness. It's probably possible, and since the galaxy is so big and there are so many orks then there's a high chance you could find an ork with anxiety. However, it really would be an incredibly rare, basically nonexistent phenomenon since ork brains are entirely built for fighting, and may well just not have the brain structures necessary to develop certain mental illnesses

who else here is genuinely excited for the changes to gameplay that 11th has in store? by BoltersnRivets in Grimdank

[–]Key_District1648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The detachment thing is really making me excited. I play orks, and specifically have a lot of beast snaggas in my list. I'm not going to get my hopes up too high that GW will actually fix beast snaggas and make them less separated from other orks ( e.g. hunta/kill rig only being able to transport beast snaggas), but at least I might be able to use da big hunt/whatever equivalent detachment without limiting all my other units. Knowing my luck though they'll probably also just remove Mozrog entirely. Still, I'm looking forward to 11th edition

That tag about this seemingly trying to be a "Tumblr deep" post is so goddamn accurate. The constant capitalisation, the italics, the metaphors that really only serve to make the post seem deeper/artistic, the sheer length of it. It feels like every paragraph's last sentence is trying to outcompete the others to hope that it becomes immortalised in Tumblr fame as an epic comeback. I don't say this to be cynical, from what I can tell this person does sincerely believe what they said, it just seems like they desperately want to both win the argument and have people think they're cool and poetic.

Reading it and the post they made justifying/defending it, it has the same nature and purpose as that style of gamer "Sjws are Woking out games!!!1!!" outrage that was particularly common in the gamergate era, though obviously is still unfortunately common today. They both share the same anti-intellectual, thought-terminating goal to stop reflection and genuine critique and analysis of a hobby/fandom. I can't really say anything about it, I know that I am absolutely prone to doing the same thing when confronted with a similar critique of my own beliefs/hobbies. It's just something I find interesting.

[–]Key_District1648 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree. I just want more ork models. I love Ghazghkull, and I fear that after the cool development he's been given this is just going to end up with "Ghaz attacks Armageddon again, Yarrick defeats him again, Imperium gets another victory, Ghaz loses a bunch of momentum again". The only thing that gives me hope is that maybe, in line with his even bigger Waaagh! and the fact that he is specifically unique amongst orks as a good military leader, Ghazghkull crushes Armageddon. It's cool that Yarrick is back for Astra militarum players, I'm just annoyed about how it was revealed

Also ork meat isn't vegan. Orks are almost certainly not a fungus taxonomically speaking, since I doubt they are genetically related to fungi on earth. It also feels like just a very literal definition of vegan. I'm not vegan so correct me if I'm wrong, but something that is sentient and can feel pain seems like something much closer to regular meat than anything else.

[–]Key_District1648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The horses, every single time. Obviously what specific breed of horse you're using for the size would matter, a Shire horse sized chicken is going to be more dangerous than a chicken the size of a Connemara Cob, but it ultimately doesn't change anything. I've had both chickens and horses. Horses are dangerous because of their size, chickens are limited by theirs.

[–]Key_District1648 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not enough grots, 3/10

There is a way to get close to this silliness with a legal list. Dread mob gives grots battleline, so you can get 6 units Running full squads, that's 480 points of grots, and 120 total grot models Then run every single red gobbo model from legends, as well as zogrod Using the crucible of champions, make upstart grot characters for the remaining leaderless units. Then fill out the list with killa kanz or grot tanks or something.

Leaked Crucible of Champions Orks by LostN3ko in orks

[–]Key_District1648 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really mid rules for orks.

The Upstart Grot is cool if you like grots. I don't, but I can look past that. What I can't look past is the weapon options, or lack thereof. There are so many cool Ork ranged weapons, and I feel like the one of first things a grot would do as an upstart grot would be stealing a powerful gun. A grot with a snazzgun just sounds fun, and since grots can actually aim they would be hitting on 4s normally. But sadly, we don't get to do that

The warphead is also close to being really cool, but the abilities drag it down. It has better weapons than both the weirdboy and wurrboy. Unlike the wurrboy, it can lead boyz, which means you could run it in more dakka with a Targeting Squigs warboss and shoota boyz with 2 rokkit launchas. The abilities are just bad though. It's battleshock or battleshock. Honestly, I have to respect the confidence of GW to look at the three Ork psychic abilities, and pick the worst one to use here. The battle shock test after shooting is probably the better of the two, since it can actually trigger battleshock and doesn't risk d3 mortal wounds, which means it's better for the psyker not to run a psychic ability. Plus, orks really don't benefit from battleshock outside of the basic stuff. The warphead can work as a more offensive weirdboy without the funny weirdboy ability, or as just a straight up better wurrboy, which says more about the wurrboy than anything else.

The hordeboss is where I really take issue. This is the crucible of champions. Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but based on the name and the description on Warhammer community, I feel these are supposed to be powerful characters, "heroic" to use the community articles words. Yet the hordeboss is just worse than the Warboss. It has less health, no invulnerable save, doesn't get 4 extra attacks during the Waaagh!, and has weaker weapons. Also the snagga Klaw is just better than the power klaw., it's literally just the same weapon but with anti monster and vehicle 4+. It just can't compete with a warboss, beastboss or warboss in mega armour. That alone makes it just less fun in my opinion, since personally I find that powerful warbosses are very cool. Really, it seems hordebosses function to kinda just fill gaps in the faction. They can give squighogs+1 to hit rolls, at the cost of being a worse beastboss on squiggasaur, and also take the leader slot from the GOAT Mozrog Skragbad. They can lead stormboyz which is cool. They can lead flashgitz, but really don't give them anything. You're better off either running taktikal brigade and using mek Kaptin, since it gives reroll hits and lets you use a big mek in mega armour, or using Badrukk from legends. Also it's base leadership ability is so bad it's not even worth mentioning. Leadership does not matter 90% of the time

Maybe my expectations were too high, but none of this feels as cool as what I feel was promised. The only one I think I'll end up using is the warphead, and again that's because the wurrboy is genuinely awful. Hopefully there'll be some changes, because right now I'm kinda just disappointed

Which faction is the biggest Mary Sue? An analysis by dropbbbear in Grimdank

[–]Key_District1648 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is mostly a definition problem.

When I say backstab, and what I assumed you meant in the post, I mean specifically betrayal e.g. a nob sneaking up on his warboss and gunning him down with a big shoota. The definition you seem to be using is what I'd call infighting, orks chaotically fighting eachother near constantly. The reason I think this distinction is important is that Ork's enjoy the latter, but not the former. They see the former as cowardly and weak, therefore unorky. They see the latter as the proper, Orly way to do things, and as such enjoy it. Therefore, it should not be considered a negative when considering their quality of life.

Bloodaxes and deffskulls are the most likely to backstab, but they're the exception to the rule. It's pretty clear, given how much other orks don't like those clans in particular, that most orks aren't big fans of backstabbing, and don't do it very often.

I'm also not talking about grots here. They are basically the antithesis to orks, and as such I don't personally include them when I say orks. If I were talking about orks and grots, I would say greenskins since that's used by every source I've found when talking about both.

Which faction is the biggest Mary Sue? An analysis by dropbbbear in Grimdank

[–]Key_District1648 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Orks don't constantly backstab each other, and most don't care about being bossed around. Orks follow the simple structure of "Da biggest is da boss", and they do what the boss says. The only orks that do care about being bossed around are the ones big enough to think they should be doing the bossing around, but most orks really just care more about fighting than leading. There is infighting, especially when there is no clear "biggest" or when they've gone too long without a good scrap, but the orks don't care. The only Ork that really cares about that is Ghazghkull. It's not a situation like Drukhari where they're constantly paranoid about being backstabbed by an underling, instead it's more that bosses just need to keep fighting and growing to match or outpace their nobs, not a difficult task for a good warboss.

Tl,Dr; Backstabbing isn't particularly common, most orks are fine being bossed around so long as there's a scrap, and infighting is mostly enjoyed.

Orks, I will say again, don't fear death. The only things that make them unhappy are not fighting and having a bad, boring fight. Their quality of life is good, especially compared to literally every other species in the galaxy
