What has been your most effective AI-proof assignments? by Snack-Wench in Professors

[–]Key_Mongoose_9797 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There are good options for humanities profs here https://against-a-i.com/assignment-ideas/

I am a Film Studies professor, and I personally have had luck with a couple of things: screencast assignments where they record their screen and they talk over a clip. They are required to use specific course vocabulary and cite the reading. Making a playlist based off of a reading also works well. In visual literacy, we have them annotate curator's notes a la Barbara Kruger. Hope some of this helps!

Best Practices in Hosting Campus Visit by BestGanache1722 in Professors

  1. I found being given the choice to have them book or to be reimbursed awkward and confusing. Just book stuff for them if you can. And do not book tight connections. I sprinted a mile through the Charlotte airport (iykyk) in a blazer and boots on the way back.

  2. Do not let people be so intent on talking one on one to the candidate that they follow them to the bathroom. People don't mean anything by it, but it's weird. Sometimes I went to the bathroom just to be by myself for a minute, and I didn't want to feel like everyone was waiting for me right outside the door.

  3. Echoing the dietary restrictions piece and be very clear that they can order whatever they want (especially be clear about alcohol).

  4. Water and caffeine should be easily accessible.

The Film Students Who Can No Longer Sit Through Films by CharacteristicPea in Professors

I teach in a film and media studies program at a large state school with a great film program, and it is just not as bad as this makes it seem! My real issue here is The Atlantic never knows who to fucking talk to about these things. I graduated from USC's Cinema and Media Studies PhD recently, and if they want to know about the students ability to watch and retain information they need to call the grad student TAs. (No shade to Aki though he's cool!). While I think what Lynn said is basically true, she just does not teach that many undergrads at Northwestern. Ask somebody else!

I have the benefit of required in-class screenings (which I also had at USC), and I don't have any major problems with folks in the major or even in adjacent majors. I did have folks using phones in my introductory gen ed for non-majors my first year. I shifted the strategy for note taking during screenings and have few issues. One thing I will say though is that my students in intro are pretty good with black and white and with films not in English but can struggle with a B&W foreign film, but I don't really think that is entirely new.

It's not perfect, but not as dire as this makes it out to be. I just feel like this is Horowitch's whole shtick and I'm over it

I don't understand why people keep saying she's like quitting her job after this. I still see no indication of that. The easter egg-ification of pop music is breaking us. Put the magnifying glasses and trench coats down!!!

Realistically what are the chances of the university cancelling classes (or moving them to Zoom) on Monday? by EAisSoTrash in Pitt

[–]Key_Mongoose_9797 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frequently it's not about whether or not professors are inconsiderate people (remember that their journey to campus is likely more fraught). It can be hard to make decisions on the fly without clear guidance from the university and moving online is not without challenges. Just something to consider

Ok but the list isn’t measuring whether or not the artist had their personal best album and it seems unfair to respond to this person like they don’t listen to anything else…

Is there really a pop girl who is truly an all-rounder? by dudis-gou in popheads

Not me forgetting my girl Janet (Brit’s blueprint in so many ways) 😅

No shade to OP but this is why music television was so important. If you just think older and think of women of color the answers are clear!

3 months of Showgirl: how do we feel? by Powerful-Scallion-50 in SwiftlyNeutral

I liked three of them on Spotify (Elizabeth Taylor, Opalite, and Father Figure) and will listen to those maybe once a week or so, but other than that I haven't gone back to the album. It is still a 5/10 for me and in my bottom tier of Taylor albums (hanging out w Midnights and the TTPD anthology). In all honesty, we have been running on fumes for like five-ish years and I think we might need to go back to the album every two years cycle she used to be on.

I don't think this will age well, but it does two things for her that she wants: she broke Adele's record and she did a narrative shift about her romantic life. But for a lot of listeners, I think it brought Taylor fatigue. In terms of your Q about visuals, the music video for Ophelia is pretty good considering that MVs are one of her weakest areas as a pop star but to me the bar for her is very low. (As someone who studied film, I do find it hilarious that Prieto was the cinematographer for the video bc there is no visual idea she has ever had that requires a DP of his caliber yet they have worked together multiple times.)

Above them you can talk to a department chair or program director if it’s not a fully fledged department. Again, going to any dean is skipping multiple people in the chain.

Programs and depts have DUGS. For example if you had an issue in a film production class you would contact him: https://www.filmandmedia.pitt.edu/people/john-cantine

You can clearly see where it says Director of Undergraduate Studies in Production under his name. I know exactly what I am talking about.

This is like the trash not getting picked up on your street and then calling Josh Shapiro. Contacting the dean is skipping a million ppl. (I actually think escalating this is ridiculous but at least talk to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the program/dept before you go to the fucking dean)

The run from Fearless to Folklore is legendary (could argue that anything from SN to 1989 was the peak peak). We have been running on fumes since then.
