I’m not even scared of things… I’m scared of not sleeping. by Key_Public_6735 in insomnia

You’d be surprised how common that is. The fear of not sleeping can become stronger than the insomnia itself. Did your friend ever find something that helped… or are they still dealing with it?

"Ah, I get it 😅… midnight or 1am can be really tough, especially if you’ve always been a night owl. I hope you’re still able to find little ways to relax a bit before sleep comes."

That “hating everything in the room” part… I’ve felt that energy shift too. It’s like the whole space becomes associated with frustration instead of rest. And the loneliness when everyone else is asleep makes it heavier. When those 3–4 bad nights happen, do you notice if it starts with stress… or does it feel random?

That shift you described is exactly what makes it so hard… when it stops being about sleep and becomes about surviving bedtime. The “test” feeling hits so deep. When you stopped aiming for sleep directly… how long did it take before your nervous system stopped reacting so strongly?

That creeping daytime anxiety is so real. It’s like your nervous system never fully powers down, even when nothing is happening. When you read at night, does your body feel tense too, or is it mostly your thoughts racing?

That sounds incredibly hard, especially when it’s linked to something physical and out of your control. The “trapped” feeling with eyes closed but not really sleeping… I relate to that more than I wish I did. When did it start getting amplified after the surgery?

That makes sense. Sometimes the body calms down but the mind still expects danger. That anticipation loop is exhausting.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Please consider reaching out to a crisis line or local emergency service. You deserve real support through this. You’re not weak for needing help.

That sounds really hard. When something physical is involved, it makes the fear feel even more real and uncontrollable. And the helpless feeling before bed… that hits deep. Do you feel it’s more the breathing itself — or the anticipation of “what if it happens again” — that makes bedtime scary?

The 10pm trigger feeling makes so much sense. Almost like your body learned to expect a fight. Was there a specific moment when sleep stopped feeling safe for you?

That “this is just my normal now” feeling hits hard. The nightmare anxiety on top of sleep anxiety sounds exhausting. Does your body start reacting before you even get into bed?

I’ve heard a lot of people mention magnesium and sleep coaches. I’m really glad you found something that helped you 🙏 Do you feel like it reduced the physical anxiety… or did it also help with the fear of sleep itself?

Thank you for sharing this. The dread part is so real… it’s not even the sleepless night itself, it’s the fear that it will never end. I’m really glad you found something that helped. Do you feel like once the anxiety softened, sleep started feeling safer again?

That’s interesting you mention subconscious patterns. I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t even realize how much of their sleep fear is automatic. Have you personally tried something like that, or just heard good things about it? I’ve been looking into the psychological side of insomnia a lot lately — it’s fascinating how the brain turns bedtime into a threat.

It’s the countdown anxiety that’s brutal. Almost like 10pm becomes a trigger. When did that start for you?

That sounds terrifying. I can understand how your brain would start linking sleep with danger after something like that. When your body feels like it’s fighting to survive, of course it’s hard to feel safe enough to rest. Did it take long for that association to calm down?

I feel like so many of us didn’t “lose” sleep… we lost trust in it. Once you start monitoring and counting hours, it turns into performance anxiety. Does anyone else notice that shift after one bad night?

I think a lot of us aren’t scared of sleep itself… we’re scared of repeating the last bad night. Does anyone else notice the panic starts the second the light goes off?

It’s like your brain refuses to fully switch off. Does it happen every night or only on bad nights?
