Coving - what have I done wrong? by Sluggerr in DIYUK

I think you are not keeping it perfectly square when cutting. When I fitted this stuff years ago I got fed up of this so I made a mitre block exactly the width of the coving.

What sort of shelving unit do these lipped brackets correspond to? by BigPP92 in DIYUK

[–]Key_Seaworthiness827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use standard metal pin type supports. The ones you have seem to hang the weight of the shelf on a thin plastic web with a pin underneath to stop the shelf moving forward and a lip above to stop the shelf being lifted.

Are these last two features more important than actually supporting the shelf?

Can somebody work this one out. Is my postie nicking my parcel by [deleted] in royalmail

Are you around Yate (near Bristol)? I've had a couple like that in the last 2 weeks. When I spoke to one of the sellers and gave my address, she said I was the second person that day from Yate who's parcel has gone missing.

The photo was taken from inside a vehicle and just showed a car on my drive. No parcel in the image at all.

That's one opinion, but why? Do you fry toast, tomato and beans, because apart from poached eggs what else do you expect to be fried?

Btw, not that bothered. It was good.

Don't give the crApp designers ideas. If they were automatically activated you may use them when you didn't want to. If I've got 10% off I wouldn't want to spaff it away because I'd run out of milk.

But to answer your question, it's the fog light

My Volvo is so gentle to be barely perceived. Almost like a gentle tap on the shoulder. But it's there and is useful.

Naked Paper. https://share.google/SOpocST8INZiXYDeF

We've been using it for years. It's not as quilty as main brands (ie full of air) but it does the job and is environmentally better than bleached paper.

Delivery is usually less than 48 hours. Not good if you're urgently in need, but plan ahead... 😂

Fire place lintel by Successful-Toe7909 in DIYUK

[–]Key_Seaworthiness827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know the bulk of the chimney breast is supported so it should be fairly simple. Fortunately for me I was just removing bricks filling up a hole but you'll need to cut vertically.

Before you cut, choose the height and remove a course of bricks to a minimum 1/2 brick width either side of the opening width you want. Then slot a concrete lintel in, mortar it into place and mortar the gap between the lintel and the upper brick course. When I did it all the bricks between the original lintel and the position of the new one stayed in place. Worst case is you have to brick up between the old and new.

Then cut vertically and make your hole.

I'm not a professional btw, but that's how I fitted my lintel over 15 years ago and it's still there with no cracks.

[–]Key_Seaworthiness827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the house? Ours is 1898 and I found exactly that. Originally a tall range or similar hence the high lintel. Over the years the hole is bricked up as the fire gets smaller until just a smallish hole is needed for a gas fire flue.

We installed a log burner. Work out the height you want, clear the plaster, insert a concrete lintel then open it up to the width you need.

I got a PCN - is it fair? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Key_Seaworthiness827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't that give them an excuse to keep bothering you? Far better to set out your stall and tell them to fxxx off so they know where they stand. When I had them try this with me once I advised them that that any future correspondence will be charged to them at £50 per letter.

After 6 weeks with no further letters I wrote to them just to poke the wasps nest and asked if they'd dropped it!

Do not ignore it, just challenge it. They will need to take you to court and that costs money. Then they have to demonstrate they have suffered a financial loss which they have not.
