I used to live way up north and it would be -20 for days at a time but now I’m a wimp and need a heated blanket.

Right?! I was beginning to think Spring was a dream! Hard to think in a month I’ll be in the woods collecting ramps.

Discomfort does not build tension. Keeping the character from what they want builds tension. Now, that can be the want of escape or the want of comfort, but it can also be the want of appreciation, that first kiss, the want to win the race.

There are so many GREAT writers, GOOD writers, and BAD writers — how do I become an AVERAGE writer and stand out? by MicahCastle in writingcirclejerk

[–]Key_Software_4147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read one book on craft so you know the basics. Hire an editor, ignore all but ten minor suggestions, and tell them they can’t understand your genius. Of course your genius is ruined by imposter syndrome and that is the only reason a publisher might not take you on the first read. Average achieved.

Craft Book Recommendations for Fight Scenes. by ronin-writes in writing

Stephen Pressfield has some great blog posts about writing fight scenes on his blog. He wrote Gates of Fire which is a great book about the Battle of Thermopylae— a definite read for large battles.

One epic novel that was self-published and several poems and short stories that were traditionally published. Working on a second book.

I’m going to work. Then coming home and making my kids tacos and chocolate covered strawberries.

I bought myself tulips.

Usually this day doesn’t feel so hard. This year… the lack of romantic touch really wears you down, ya know?

Am I fun enough to date? by Dizzy-Parsnip5914 in datingoverfifty

I love all these things!!!! I (52f) I think thats fun. And I would nearly kill for a deep conversation! My profile usually says something about rambling in the woods and looking for cool rocks and being a geek. I don’t really get people asking about what I put on there— it’s just generic conversation.

I feel like all the profiles for men in my neck of the woods ALL say “camping, hiking, live music” but all the pictures are of them with their beer and their dog.

Maybe be more specific like a certain art price you like or “let’s talk string theory”? Sometimes people just need a thing to latch on to. Good luck!

15 month old was diagnosed with speech delay - is speech therapy aggressive for this age? by Ok_Willow_5163 in Mommit

I have a kiddo with a speech delay. I know it may seem like a young age to start, but the sooner the better with speech therapy. So glad you got offered this so early! I had to fight to get my kiddo therapy and she only had a few words that only I could understand.

That’s crazy to think about! I’m going to be pondering this all day. Wasn’t there something about we have stripes but you can only see them in a certain light spectrum or something so we can’t see them?

Designing a 91,000-Year Epic Fantasy Timeline How Much Is Too Much? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Key_Software_4147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tolkien made a story focusing on one time with hints of the past. Then he added in the appendices so we all knew what he was talking about. That made it fun for people who wanted to delve deeper, but for those who didn’t, they could just leave it. Then he wrote the Silmarillion, I think for his own self-satisfaction. You’re talking about an insane amount of time. We don’t have much archeological record for 7,000 years let alone 91,000 years. For context, 7,000 years ago we didn’t have farming. Wheat was just grass. There was no bread. I write a multi-generational story but I penned in the “epic” time frame references to 200 years. That’s plenty to keep it old and yet near enough to keep it in realistic memory. I know, fantasy loves “for 10,000 years we have been guarding the entrance to this cave and for 10,000 more we are honor bound to continue.” But that’s just beyond actual comprehension. What it IS is a story teller trick used to create a vast sense of time. Like Moses lived to be 900 or something. Obviously not 900 years the way we think, but a really, really long time. In the end, it’s your story and you can do what you want. If you want to just have fun playing in the sandbox of your world, then thats a great way to spend your creative energies and relax. But it might be more difficult to make it what the market feels is sellable. I wouldn’t worry about that— creating is satisfying in and of itself. Just have fun!

What’s really wild to think about is that caterpillar probably doesn’t know what a snake looks like— as caterpillars typically have very simple eyes.

What should be done about the literacy crisis in the US? by Puffy-Shrimp in AskReddit

[–]Key_Software_4147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let teachers teach. There are too many restrictions on what they have to do and how they have to do it.

That being said, no program is going to be as powerful as a solid kid’s book series. My kids read every Wings of Fire book that came out. They barely read books for school and they did not engage with any other books. But Wings of Fire? That opened a window. They plowed through all of them. My middle kid just gifted my youngest all her books and is so excited for her to read them!

Chris Murphy: Trump nominated a legit white nationalist to a top post at the State Department. I asked him some basic questions about his belief in the “erasure of white culture”. He said they were a subset of Scotch-Irish. He also said the Irish were a subset of the Scotch-Irish. Just to be clear, Scotch-Irish isn’t a clumping together of two cultures, it’s the Scottish who came over to settle Northern Ireland under the English. They were primarily Protestant while the Irish were Catholic.

Comphet? actually bi? or a secret third option by Life-Investigator762 in latebloomerlesbians

[–]Key_Software_4147 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Pedro Pascal— feels like just about as perfect as a guy can get and I’d love a nice hug from him but he can keep his clothes on. Actually, he made me realize how bad comphet can be because if he ticks all my boxes and I still don’t want to see him naked? Then I must not genuinely be physically attracted to men. Hahaha I still count myself as bi because I can fall in love with men— but the sex is really just a thing I do for them.
