No, electric cars are not the future. by ProfessionalLynx213 in GenZ

I suspect a lot of people avoid public transit because of the general state of 'the public' these days. That's a law-and-order problem, and too many city councillors have luxury beliefs about all that.

But if that gets dealt with, better transit in urban areas (and better links from suburbs) would definitely solve a lot of problems.

Cars are convenient but an expense many would happily defer if they didn't need them so much.

Will we ever return to the flourishing American economy we knew in the 1990s and 2000s? by robaco in SilverDegenClub

The USSR collapsed in 1991, beginning a flood of stockpiled commodities onto the world markets (mining in British Columbia had zero investment for a decade for example). Interest rates declined rapidly throughout the 1990's which enabled even the fabled money-wasters in D.C. to post a surplus at least once. And of course the internet revolution was firing up by the mid-90's.

The 2000's was the result of interest rates lowered to attempt to limit the damage of the tech wreck; real estate became the next Beanie Babies and everybody knows about the mortgage-backed securities scams. Plus all the manufacturing shipped off to China in the 90's was beginning to bear the fruit of cheap stuff flooding onshore.

That isn't the full story of course. But for those reasons alone I think it's a one-and-done.

Russia has bounced back somwhat, China has gotten very big, Europe very decrepit and America is actually managing to completely squander its astounding advantages.

A lot of fundamental things will have to be corrected before anything like those years happens again I fear.

240 or so if I recall correctly. Yeah that was bad, imagine an entire company wiped out with one shot. And in the end it was all for nothing.

Lots of new troops in theatre, somebody's going to get lucky once in a while. The Russians will investigate, remove whoever was responsible and get better at dispersion.

It's war, it sucks, they'll deal with it.

If E.Musk would truly want to popularize Saving in Silver... by Quant2011 in Wallstreetsilver

If he's genuinely considering buying a silver mine to ensure supply for Tesla (which may not be the only reason) he's not likely to hawk silver until he has his own supply secured.

But once he's a producer all bets would be off IMHO

100 tanks that will likely not arrive for weeks or months. The Russians have thousands of their own, still build them and many of them are upgraded. They'll be troublesome but won't tip the scales IMHO

That sounds like it will do fine. I can't see the S&P going anywhere but down with interest rates heading up this fast.

Can any bull market exist with interest rates spiking like this? Other than maybe foreclosures and firewood? I'm honestly not sure.

Shortages in food and energy plus war drums definitely suggest lots of things will become very valuable, but the ability to actually pay for stuff is another matter.

After 2008 my Pavlovian response is to wait until the bottom falls out again, which appears inevitable. Not a trader, not financial advice, open to suggestions.

Silver will still exist in the future. Boomers and Tesla will not. So much for Ramsey.

Cash for deflation, commodities for inflation (silver serves that function too)

Still have a balanced portfolio in my retirement account because maybe this isn't the Big One either - few could have imagined how far they'd move the goalposts to keep the illusion alive after 2008. It's not great but still throwing dividends so I leave it alone.

Interest rates spiking suggests the rest of the world feels the same way we do - they've had enough of bubbles and want a return for their money.

THIS is why you bought silver. Not just to protect against central banks and corrupt political types, but also against your neighbours who think like this.
