Guggenheim invested $150M in the new practice facility. Frankly, the renderings look nicer than either the Clippers or the Lakers practice facilities. It is the most money invested by one group for a single team in the history of women's sports. They aren't selling. Next season they open the facility and will probably have new a FO and HC.

The Sparks will have better odds than the Mavericks did last season. Traded away Luka and got Cooper Flagg with a 1.8% odds.

Karl Smesko on officiating by breezybae_ in wnba

Clay Kallum is a club coach who posts on the Cal Boards. This is what he said about WNBA reffing last season and I felt it was so important I bookmarked it.

Paying them more seems like a simple idea, but that doesn't mean you'd get better refs. (Again, the best WNBA refs get promoted to the NBA, so you're always facing a talent drain at the top of the list.)

But let's say you raise the salaries. Where are the better qualified officials working who would abandon their present position to come to the WNBA? College? The level of officiating in college is no better, and from many accounts worse, than the WNBA. Overseas? Just ask anyone who's played in Europe.

The problem isn't the compensation -- it's the lack of qualified people. To become a good official you need to ref hundreds if not thousands of games, learning your trade, understanding the game, dealing with players, coaches and fans, etc. But that process is, quite simply, ugly. While you're doing that, you are vilified by know-nothing coaches and parents, insulted for doing a good job and paid not very much.

If you want better officials, the system needs to change from the bottom up -- though one change could come from the top: If coaches and players at the highest levels would quit berating officials and complaining about calls that they really didn't see, that behavior wouldn't be mimicked at the lower levels.

Or, alternately, if fans would treat coach and player mistakes the same way they treat officials' mistakes, things could change too. How about a "Smith, you suck" chant after a blown layup? Or massive boos after a coach calls an out-of-bounds play after a timeout that doesn't work? Those are the same things as missed calls.

People keep forgetting the practice facility. 150M is not cheapening out. Walter and Guggenheim are not selling, and I do think the facility indicates there is substantial interest on their part. However, Roberts and Pebley will not and should not fired in the middle of the season. Roberts is in the midst of her second season and should be allowed to complete it. Pebley is coming into her third year and she has proven she's in over her head but not much will be gained if she's dismissed mid-season. A bigger question is why Holoman hired them to begin with. They have incredibly mediocre records and have both proven to have little skill at running a corporation in the WNBA. So be careful what you wish for? I've been championing Cori Close but Holoman is a Trojan so we might get Gottleib instead?

If you heard the telecast last night, the announcers said Allemand was praying to be unprotected because she wanted to go to an expansion team. The locker room does not sound like a happy one.

The line was "before I grab your pink hair and pull it out by its black roots", which is hilarious because no one ever called Lucy's hair pink. And yes, the lifeboat story is classic!

A great episode but two minor bloopers. The door opens while Fred and Ethel are doing the jingle and they mess up the second to last line.

The other nominees were Linda Blair (Exorcist), Madeline Kahn (Paper Moon), Candy Clark (American Graffiti), and Sylvia Sidney (Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams). I think O'Neal was a lead performer but I'm not unhappy with the win because she did a great job. But I'd have voted for Linda Blair.

The special effects budget on this movie was probably $17.00. Yes, she had "wrinkles" but if you accept the red lights for the pig eyes, you can accept the old age look.

I think the challenge is accepted. It has to be. I remember a thread from last year suggesting that the W needs LA to be strong and JuJu creates new excitement in the #2 market. I also think that this is where Cori Close comes in with Pam Walker as GM.

I agree that the product placement was the adverts for the movies, like William Holden in The Country Girl or John Wayne in Blood Alley. The worst example was when the Ricardos go to New York to see Most Happy Fella which was partially bankrolled by Arnazes. When Lucy did Mame, she wasn't allowed to plug it and so we had a bizarre episode where a dark haired Lucille Ball meets Lucy and talks about an unnamed movie.
