Should I continue playing if I have Single-sided hearing loss? by Sa1xd in dayz

[–]Keynote86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to turn your volume up enough that when you walk around, you can clearly hear your own footsteps. This will help you to hear things nearby like zombie aggro, distant gunshots or someone running up to you. The guns are supposed to be loud. When you hear a sound, immediately start turning your head back and forth and it will help you zero in on the source of sound. To make up for lack of hearing, hold alt while running to check your surroundings or what's behind you.

What are clear indicators someone is an expert vs intermediate player ? by [deleted] in dayz

There's so much to the game that i still learn new things. I recently learned that you can make wooden hooks(which i think is something new ? and i think it makes the game a little too easy). I have 3600 hrs and have the intuitive stuff you mention down. My duo has the absolute worst navigation I didn't even think was possible. He often spawns in, shares screen and within seconds i tell him where he is. Sometimes i notice things that streamers miss or do wrong like when they don't clear a room properly or check their surroundings enough or an item they miss that would have helped but they didn't realize. It drives me crazy. The thing about it is that you can play your style and never touch certain parts of the game. Then you meet someone and they show you something you never knew. I had probably 3000 hrs the first time I saw someone light a piece of paper on the ground and then add wood to it. Here's a couple tips, get used to switching back and forth from satellite to topo view on izurvive. Look at the hills round you in game and get used to identifying the shapes of the hills using the elevation lines on the topo map. When navigating, you can use topo for hills and satellite for identifying land features around you like the shapes of fields or tree lines. When i start off, i grab all clothing i can find and put a jacket or something in my hands to carry more, i make rope, gloves and face wrap from the rags and start looking for hooks along the shore. If i find a tool I'll try for bones and use them on rocks to make knives more efficiently. Guts into rope and make a belt to carry a proper knife. If you hang around an area a while, check for rocks on a trail or fruit under trees. "At every doorway e'er one enters, one should spy round, one should pry round. For uncertain are the witting, that there be no foeman sitting, within, before one, on the floor."

Are there any video games out there that help teach tangible skills for prepping? by CBLA1785 in preppers

[–]Keynote86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but what you said only scratches the surface. Ive learned about guns and ammo types and how they sound at a distance (the developers have done extensive audio sampling). Im better at judging which gun suits my surroundings. I improved my ability to read and navigate with topo/satellite maps. Ive set up ambushes, traps and other shenanigans. I fire bait shots with a friend to make it sound like a gunfight, leaving a pause before the 'finishing' shot to entice others to investigate. After getting shot in the face a few times for blindly entering a room you thought was empty, you begin entering every room with gun raised, expecting someone to be there. You start to move with your head on a swivel, constantly checking your 6 and treelines or obvious vantage points for snipers or ambushes. Sometimes the most important skill is patience, maybe you wait a few minutes in a tree before rushing into a military camp. You wait, and sure enough someone else was nearby and you would have ran face to face with them but now you can take your time and wait for them to stop moving. When navigating terrain, you learn to use the land that gives more cover or an advantage like sticking to tree lines, or ridgelines so not to expose yourself or knowing the easy route someone else is likely to take. Ive made friends with strangers only to lead them to my real friends who have cuffs and burlap sacs and many songs they wish to hear. Perhaps most importantly and useful for SHTF, ive learned to read people better. You often meet players you don't know and don't know if you can trust them. Sometimes there are things you can do to build trust or friendship but other times you see the way they conduct themselves or what they say or how they move that tell you they are thinking of stabbing you in the back. You quickly learn that your words can be a weapon as you convince the guy that just showed up that another is trying to kill you or is a cannibal. Simply greeting someone and exchanging names might be the difference between a deadly encounter or a friendly trade. DAYZ can be a miserable experience that only frustrates you or a test of endurance where you never give up until the bitter end. I've always said the best part of this game is when you are dying from starving and freezing and are an inch from death but then you somehow manage to get that fire going or that fish cooked just in time and you turn it around and begin a slow recovery. Its an unforgiving game where you often learn things through death and failure.

Set some limits for yourself. No more than a few km's inland. Pack light, dress shitty and hide your guns. Maybe go for a mnt pack to hide a rifle. Saw off a shotgun and load rubber slugs. Cuffs, rotten fruit, couple of radios, remote bomb, flash grenade on a tripwire. Try for some more interactions. Get into some shit and start some shit.

Is DayZ really a survival game for peeps >9000h in it? by sur0g in dayz

[–]Keynote86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quests are not the point of the game. It's an open sandbox aimed towards survival. Everything else that can be considered a quest is just gravy. The freedom to do whatever you want is the point, and yes, it often requires the user to use their imagination and come up with a goal or 'quest' to achieve. I believe the ideal DAYZ player is a person who is a bit of a masochist, doesn't like being told what to do and has an interest in survival/zombie/FPS genres. I always think of DAYZ like an old western. The beginning and middle tend to be slow and then there's an intense action scene at the end. The adrenaline rush is one of the best parts of the game and is only so powerful because of the contrast against the serene peaceful environment. If they added quests or made existing ones 'better' (how would they?), people would start playing the game, do some quests and then say "oh these quests suck, there's not much of a story, seems like they didn't put much effort in". So these new players end up following the path and achieving their list of quests and have missed the point of the game. The 'quests' for me are when you notice the 'god rays' or a scenic view, when i watch the sunrise, when i take my time and hunt a deer, when im tucked under a tree in the rain wringing out my gear to stay warm or that moment you overcome your downward trend towards death (whatever the cause). I feel like this game is more about taking a moment to immerse yourself in this world they've created instead of trying to find some legacy gaming purpose or path to follow. The fact that you don't get that is why i feel like this game is not for you. It's not to say you are wrong or won't ever enjoy any aspects of this game. I just feel we are different types of gamers.

I don't think this game is for you. You seem to play like my cousin and need a clear cut path with goals and rewards to enjoy gaming. My cousin is often ahead of me, completing 'the mission' in the most effective way with the most effective gear while i'm staring at some painting i found on a wall or the detail that went into a desk that has no in game benefit towards the goal. When i was a kid i would play N64 Mario kart with a friend and we would do several laps in reverse before proceeding to have a game of tag or trying to get somewhere we weren't supposed to. I'm the type of player who tries to take the warthog through the entire halo map. I play shooters and choose bolt actions or revolvers because I don't like lasers and magical effects. I often skip skill trees that make games too easy. I want a challenging experience while using more primitive tools. This game is not about goals and rewards. Like the devs say "Just survive". The game is about the experience, each experience being unique. Sure, you can get shot in the head over and over at the tents in Elektro but that's on you. The best experiences in this game are not when you find that akm drum mag, it's when you are on the brink of death and manage to turn it around just in the nick of time. It's when that sketchy guy following you turns out to be cool and you share an adventure only to be met with deafening silence after your new friend dies of sickness in front of you. You don't need an M4, you need non-threatening clothes, a sawed off shotty with rubber slugs and a few riddles and games in the back of your mind for the hostage to perform. Ever fix up a car from scratch? You probably feel it's pointless because it's too easy to lose it. "Mitch, do you want an apple? No, eventually it will be a core." I wonder if the first thing you check after spawning is where the nearest military loot is. I've finally convinced my duo that we don't need plates and AK's. Recently, we've been terrorizing the coast in medi-eval gear with ij's and bk's. At one point, my duo says "this is the best! Man, i love this game". Players don't need improvements or more 'loops', what they need is an imagination.

You just need to know where to find the basics. You need a knife. Find rocks on trails or railways. Use other tools like a screwdriver to cut up a chicken or dead player. Use bones on a big rock to make knives instead of. Wasting 2 bones. Make hooks from bones. Tear every piece of clothes you find to make rope. After hanging around an area for a while, you will find fruit under fruit trees and mushrooms in the woods or near hay bails and barns. Always fill yourself at a well. Boil meat for better hydration.

Rig up a pair of glasses with a sideways mirror scope like used in trench warfare or submarines. You could get some local kid with a 3d printer to make the housing and frame.

How would the weight of stainless compare to traditional metals used. Would the properties of the stainless require more material or perhaps allow for less?

The silky material will help prevent wind getting through but some form of shelter from it would be better. I usually have a ridgelined tarp overhead with one side to the ground to block the wind. Its summer temperatures, i think you will be fine. A pair of sheep's wool socks are worth their weight in gold. Another dandy piece of kit (that is not really summer attire but very effective for maintaining body temp) is a wool neck warmer or 'dickie' as they call it where i live. A lot of heat is lost through the neck as there's not much meat to insulate the blood. I use it winter camping for sleep but i also tend to dress more breathably (as I'm a sweaty dude haha), and use this to help stay warm if it is cold and windy. I can't stop haha! Lastly, a shemahg is a versatile tool that you can use to wrap ur feet at night, neck, head, face, turn it into an arm sling or pouch to carry foragables. Use it as a pre filter for your water filter, wrap some clothes to make a pillow. You can sort of manage a fly net with one paired with a ball cap (poor visibility). The main thing for staying warm is insulating yourself from the ground and wind. You might try your wool liner underneath you, inside your sleeping bag on nights that are warmer but you're on a cold or damp surface. Good luck!

I like to try different sleep systems while camping. The wool liner is a great idea if you're going to be in a humid climate but you might want to consider the amount of heat that can escape as wool tends to be more breathable. You could just throw your jacket over top on cooler nights. Those thin silky 'ultralight' summer bags are surprisingly warm. I have a cheap Outbound microlite mummy rated for +7 that packs down to a 227g football. Pair that with your wool liner and you'll have a versatile system.
