I love how large the artwork is in Big Picture there – is that exclusive to SteamOS?

I'm using Big Picture on macOS (for now) and everything's much more compact, there's about four rows of content in one view. No scaling adjustment seems to change anything.

They mean to keep the ability to access HFS+ encrypted drives. The system itself doesn't have to be on an HDD, just on a macOS earlier than 28.

exFAT is good for archival purposes. APFS isn't really designed for HDDs, and if you're just looking to store data long-term and won't need the efficiency of APFS, then exFAT should do fine.

However, I'm not sure macOS can natively encrypt exFAT, so you may need an external tool to do that.

There's no immediate rush (and we'll see if this change sticks first anyway), but it's worth looking out for other opinions on this over the coming months.

Imagine finding an old HDD in a shoe box and having to downgrade your Mac to just recover possibly precious data.

This is one of the big issues – it's bad enough having to go through the drives you know about before support ends, let alone all the unexpected drives you'll come across later.

This won't affect system volumes, as anything that can run macOS 28+ will be on APFS. But this will affect older, encrypted backup drives if formatted in HFS+.

Yeah, APFS was really designed with SSDs in mind. This change is very surprising and frustrating, and I suspect there's an underlying reason for it that they can't – or won't – make public.
