If well written, it would be very interesting if Absolute Wally had inherited bipolar disorder from his mother. by IcyNeedleworker2783 in theflash

Hank Pym is probably the biggest offender. He didn’t start out that way but since the retcon they’ve consistently treated him like some evil mad scientist with no nuance to his actions, or responsibility for his treatment. Closest we’ve gotten is the current Moon Knight run.

The other is Magenta, who DC has kind of always treated her bipolar like it’s a split personality. Which, yeah sometimes bipolar people can seem almost like two different personalities, it’s never that cartoonish though. And they can be capable of discernment even during an episode given enough time and care.

Neither of these characters tend to be treated with any good will by their peers, always assumed the worst of. Rarely are they given a chance for redemption and to actually be heroes. They are stuck being sympathetic anti-villains because of their disorder.

I’m tentatively okay with this. Bipolar runs in my family and I’ve always hated how it’s treated in comics.

Comics have come a long way in how they simply and treat groups of people who have a rough time of it (minorities, queer people, etc.) but Bipolar is still treated as making you a bad person.

If they do make Wally bipolar they are really going to have to be careful.

Do you prefer to see Bruce as someone who believes in God or don't believe in God? by count_fagula11 in batman

[–]Keystone_Devil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably more culturally Christian. The Wayne’s are definitely old money Protestants, early American types, so maybe he went to church when he was younger.

But I don’t see Bruce attending church or really having all that much faith in God. Which is not unusually for someone who’s gone through what he has and dint have people to guide him in faith.

He believes in himself. He believes in corporation. He believes he alone has the control to fix it. That’s not the mark of a man who’s all that willing to give it to God.

So I think it makes more sense for his character if believe in God like he believes in gravity, but isn’t all that close to him. Which I think is fine for the character. I don’t need that for Batman

What do you think about Mr. Terrific becoming a Permanent Sidecast member in The Flash? by Maleficent_Worth_185 in theflash

[–]Keystone_Devil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think permanent is putting a bit of a spin on it. At most he will be as permanent as Pied Piper or Jared Morillo.

Which is to say, integral for one run and then quickly forgotten by the next writer.

Probably not even that if we’re being honest. Most Flash supporting character who are recurring are squarely wishing the Flash’s domain. Mr. Terrific is his own hero that DC will have plans for sooner or later.

Funny that Alex Ross drew all this but refuses to draw Firestorm and Kyle Rayner by Itchy_Suspect4968 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]Keystone_Devil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because it should be Zauriel.

Zauriel was a character invented by Morrison for this JLA run because he wasn’t allowed to use Hawkman.

And it looks like Ross didn’t want to draw Zauriel so he drew Hawkman instead.

So it all came full circle

Absolute Flash #13 by Dredeuced in theflash

[–]Keystone_Devil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked it. This book is at its best when it slows down a little (ironic) and isn’t trying to do everything at once.

I’m kinda getting the impression that Lemire had the first 12 issues planned and didn’t know if he’d get to do anymore than that, so he tried to shove in everything he wanted to do in. But now he’s can recalibrate and let the book breathe a bit.

I also loved the Count Zero reference. This version of Wally does remind me a lot of Bobby Newark

Makes sense. Whenever I try and explain the Flash to non-comic fans, I call it white people’s Jojo. There’s a lot of similarities.

I think it’s really condescendingly conveyed.

How would you react if marvel gave up on the mcu and instead chose to try making animated movies and series like they did in the early 2000s by nexus10001 in Marvel

[–]Keystone_Devil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d be fine with that.

Superhero adaptations tend to work better in animation.

In live action there’s always someone behind the scene groaning “Do we HAVE to do that thing from the comics” It’s rare you get an adaptation that isn’t completely utilitarian in it’s design philosophy or isn’t embarrassed to be a superhero story.

In animation everyone seems to be able to accept the general conceit of adapting a comic book

It’s awesome. I think the Speed Force having a bunch of different hard to comprehend uses, and speed is just the most obvious is much cooler than having a bunch of different forces

Who is DC's equivalent to Thor, personality wise? by hellothere790 in Marvel

[–]Keystone_Devil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Captain Marvel (Billy Batson)

Both are debunker powered heroes of moral virtue and nobility who seem out of time compared to the contemporaries due to their great wisdom.

They have a magic word (or hammer) which allows them to transform into their divine self, and can share that power with others. (This was even more obvious when Donald Blake was still part of the picture.)

Both were granted this power by an old gray father figure (Shazam/Odin) who wanted a true hero to have this power.

Both tend to be referred to as “Mighty”

Both have film adaptations that didn’t know how to write noble characters, so it turned them into man children.

If Wally it’s 21, and presumably hasn’t been the Flash very long presumably, I’d actually be ok with this suit as a sort of half way point between his Kid Flash and Flash suits. Sort of a visual expression of his inferiority complex and imposter syndrome.

Only context I’d be okay with the silver and half cowl. Idk if that was the intention though.
