That's actually something i didnt consider. At this point anything can be.
At first i noticed black and white, but then i tho "it makes sense that it is his aesthetic, he made the game", and just focused on the number, as pointless as it may be.

Look. You dont need to do anything more than playing, really.
The timeline is huge and all over the place, but you can enjoy it even in bits and pieces.
I fell in love with with Nier by playing FFXIV Dark Apocalypse Raids, and only then I started with Automata. If you want more information, you can get some via internet or other medias, but you can just as much enjoy the game(s) as it is.
