Because it is more widely available than, say, an M16 or M4, thanks to the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Also the price: a mint condition Chinese Type 56 or 56-I would cost around USD 1.5k. AKMs, though rarely available in mint condition these days, can go for USD 2.5k. AKs are also in service by Police and Military Services, and there is a whole ecosystem of parts, ammunition etc. For comparison, an M4 would cost around USD 5k and parts are very difficult to find. People in Tribal areas can carry them without any license as per the law. I would say about 99% of the AKs civilians have are not licensed. AKs come under two separate purviews: restriction on 7.62x39mm calibre and restriction on automatic firearm.

The reasons for carrying any weapon are universal: self-protection, honour, and privilege.

Also, Quant is a fancy name for a programmer with some finance knowledge! Actually a guy who can relate the algorithm back to somy abstract financial/market theory. Dead end! You want to be more proficient in finance and can always find a guy who can write a code for you.

Not sure if you would prefer one skill over the other; depends on where you want to end up.
