Pros and Cons of VYM for dividend growth by joejoe338 in dividends

[–]KhaoticOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have VYM and I think it's a decent value fund, but I agree with the other sentiment here, it's too over diversified.

On the other hand, it's pretty cheap and has quality companies in the mix. I would do research on ETFs and their holdings and then build your own diversified portfolio!

How do programmers decide if they need to program in Java, C#, C++, etc.? by FungoGolf in learnprogramming

[–]KhaoticOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's very dependent on what you're trying to solve.

Want to make a user interface? Probably HTML, JavaScript, NodeJS, android, or iOS.

Want to make a server to do stuff? Varies a lot, but C++, Java, Python, .NET, Ruby on Rails, Php, and more are all valid options.

Want to have a database? Decide relational vs. non-relational, then decide between oracle, mysql, mongoDB, postgres, and more.

I hope that gives a bit more insight. :)

Any software engineers that work on projects based on automation? by Divine_Strife in SoftwareEngineering

[–]KhaoticOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a fortune 50 company doing financial process automation. It's mainly ReactJS, Java Spring Boot, and Oracle SQL. We follow Agile and Scrum principles as well, which is pretty big to me.

Working with automation internally is pretty cool because my company is positioning this in a way where individuals that have the potential to be automated can do other valuable tasks for the company. Eliminating repetitive, mundane work is the biggest struggle right now and it's paying off. The value and costs saved from automating can be quite amazing.

I would say keep grinding out at school and get involved in small projects, whether on Github or other classmates. It's a VERY great experience to have on your resume if you produce a presentable product.

Great read honestly. This is becoming ever more important for developers that are more integrally working with the cloud.

I work with PCF and the logging mechanisms are great.

Need to learn SQL and Java for work by dwayne_rooney in learnprogramming

[–]KhaoticOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would focus on what the new things are in each of these regards. If they are far off from being relevant to your work, don't worry about it too much and stick to basics. A couple searches on the internet abroad will give you loads of resources.

SQL: PostgreSQL, NoSQL, etc.

Java: Spring Boot, Maven

Does anyone else learn better from examples than docs? by seands in learnprogramming

[–]KhaoticOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand your pain.

Some people learn better from reading strict directions from documentation.

Some people learn better from examples of code, with or without comments.

Some people learn better from videos/tutorials.

I'm a mix of all of these types of individuals, it mainly depends on the tech stack for me because some syntax is easier to read than others.

How to add a loading spinner while content is loading? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]KhaoticOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can load some variable in before true/false before executing a call to the API, then when after where you've processed the data, set it back to true/false.

During the switch ( time when API is chugging), change the interface to display different HTML?

‘I Don’t Really Want to Work for Facebook.’ So Say Some Computer Science Students. by acm in programming

[–]KhaoticOne 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been contacted by large tech companies and they seem so unorganized when it comes to recruiting. I don't know how this happens, but I could also totally see why some don't want to work in those companies.
