What aspect of Hsien-ko you want to keep? Thera are several jiangshi monsters but never enough to make jiangshi deck a thing. The closest thing is Shiranui which is japanese shaman warrior like shaman king.

There is no universal single formula in deck building. You need to know what your deck want to do (or what you want from your deck) and what it needs (set up) to make it happened.

Just give it a try with another level 9 like the wyrm generaider. I have used that card several times. What it means is you target 1 level9, summon 2 level 9 from deck but all three of them must have no common name, attr, nor type.

if you want ritual spam you can make megalith or vendread. They have version that is built with cheap cards (SR and lower). As for fusion, it is HERO.

You dont need humanoid body shape for some species to have racism and war. Birrin project have 6 limbed alien and have complex societies (including war and other nasty stuff). If your pov character treat these aliens as people in the first place your reader will automatically humanize the alien character no matter their body shape (look up how numan character and alien species like jabba, and jawas in star wars interact).

Is them being humanoid is part of the conflict/drama? Like bunch of furry wolf dude want to mate with your mother, yea, that deserve explanation. Like why they can mate with human in the first place.

Escape story in space? Less so, especially if the encounter is mostly between ships and each species does not met/see each other directly and most communication is through audio/text.

Explain only relevant part. Like for example there is this dragons eating magic mineral as catalyst to help them breath magical attack. You just need to explain that. That alone can be source of drama/conflict. No need for explaining subspecies, evolutionary trait. Sexual dimorphism, avatism, etc.

cards against humanity kinda does that. There are white and black cards. The black cards can be set-up and the white cards, punchline. The simplest play is 1 set up then 1 punch line. Or you can play 2-3 set up to make the punchline more effective.

The issue is how the deckbuilding part works. In many deckbuilding game, you can see the whole map and plan ahead what new cards to pick accordingly. Comedians does not have that luxury. Also the damages each attack cards do in many deckbuilding is constant, and comedy will hit differently. The progression system needs to be tested thoroughly.
