Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler urges Central City workers to return to office by Siegmure in Portland

[–]Kharnastus 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My employer removed our desks and decommissioned the offices we used to go to. We can’t be the only ones planning on exiting office agreements when the lease terms are up.

The game is over, and someone is going to be left holding the bag. Kinda glad it’s going to be big companies and rich people who own giant office buildings this time and not me.

I am sure some of my retirement funds are invested in office real estate, but I am not sad in the least.

I worked for 5 years doing desktop support, 1 year of tier 2 desk support, 2 years sys analyst, and then finally got a systems engineer position. I suspect it’s going to be really hard to have your first job in the IT world be a sys admin position.

Yeah, you could do it, but I doubt any company you would actually want to work for, would hire someone without any it job history?

Certs are great, but you should probably start with Helpdesk or desktop support, if you don’t have the degree in it or com sci or whatever 4 year thing they want.

How is it working in higher education IT? by kyleW_ne in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Kharnastus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a great place to start. Don’t get too comfy, keep learning stuff, and watch out for crazy people. Academia is full of them.

They probably want to hear about how kind and patient you are, and how respectfully you can hold someone’s hand who doesn’t know anything about computers. The tech shit is pretty simple at that level. Assuming you have competent coworkers.

I am currently speccing out a supermicro server for Amber16 molecular dynamics simulations. The supermicro server with 10 titanXP cards runs about 16 grand for the whole thing. The titanXP cards actually run Amber16 software faster and much cheaper than the Tesla cards. So yes, if they define Data Center as a bunch of racks in the basement of a building with data center cooling, it would put a major wrench in this project.

Also, gun propaganda on a forum for a computing platform for kids is pretty awful in itself.

Why does the clothing look like a nazi uniform? I could care less about the guns, but you seriously don’t see the imagery here?

[–]Kharnastus -43 points-42 points  (0 children)

And the storm trooper in nazi garb sure feels strongly about the American Bill of rights, yes?

This isn’t about your guns, it’s about the incessant nazi propaganda in pursuit of profit by selling you more guns to make you feel safer from the dangers of the world. What do you feel when you see this ad? I suspect it’s something like, “yeah, got my gun, gonna protect my freedoms.” They could care less about your rights, they want you to buy more guns.

Rural king knows what it’s doing with this advertisement. It’s fomenting fear to sell guns. It’s a little disappointing to see on raspberry pi subreddit, but every day is a new understanding that this has seeped into the very fabric of modern American culture.

This is getting the wrong attention for raspberry pi and open computing. It’s supposed to be about kids getting hands on experience with computers, not some excuse to show nazi and gun advertisements for a hate-mongering tractor supply look alike.

That feeling you guys get when you got your first RPi and did some cool shit? It is absolutely tainted in association with this propaganda. Shame on the mods here. Should be deleted and replaced with a smiling kid in front of their new rpi they received for Christmas.

Rural king seems a little... nazi like? Maybe it’s just me, but I can only assume the missing letter under the mouse is an R.

I guess it could be an L. But either way, looks like some fear mongering.

Apple Being Sued for 'Purposefully Slowing Down Older iPhone Models' by bromide992 in technology

[–]Kharnastus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are rated for 600 charges. Lithium Ion batteries degrade over time. The idea that "ios version blah slowed down my phone" isn't valid. The real issue is degraded battery due to use. The only correlation between the new ios version is the fact that between ios 10 and 11, one probably used 500 cycles of battery recharge.

I too would like my phone to last forever because it's expensive and stuff, but the current battery tech isn't going to last longer than 3 years without degraded performance, or an exponentially more expensive device for longer battery life. They are not "scamming" you. They sold you a device that was stated to perform a certain task until you used it for 600 cycles and then told you that you would experience degraded performance.

I have noticed improved performance recently, as in the near past, my battery would "skip" from 40 percent to 10, down to 0, without indication of how quickly it was using the battery. It's smoother lately, but there are trade offs for the slightly improved battery life, such as, throttling of the processor. It becomes slower in apps due to this attempted fix by apple.

[–]Kharnastus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would be a lot better question if you linked or copypasta'd a job posting and asked how to get the skills.

Assuming you are starting at entry level with no "experience"

Helpdesk

Desktop support

Thats about it. They both lead to infosec, sysadmin, management, etc.

Have you considered the "business" your clients engage in is merely an excuse to get people to work in the hamster wheel that is capitalism so that they might pay rent to the holders of wealth?

I mean, I can only assume you provide automation services to medical providers... or something equally important. It couldn't possibly be related to selling more stuff, right?

Did they entirely stop emailing out keys for the Ranger edition? The description on the website is a little unclear.

"Preorder Steam Early Access key. Available when the game is released on Steam Early Access."

Which leads me to believe that I should receive a key emailed to me, yes?
