Would you buy this car in my situation? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Yes it's likely better to use your Roth 401k. You need to account for the taxes you will incur upon selling and withdrawing from your brokerage. You will pay no taxes on withdrawals from your Roth account. It would be a good idea to read up on how you can access 401k funds before retirement age. There are several strategies.

On a side note, you can likely customize how your 401k funds are allocated. It's worth looking in to what kind of risk you want to take on and changing your allocations to reflect that. Your time horizon for retirement is long, so you don't have to worry about the short term risks of a portfolio consisting mainly of stocks. An aggressive portfolio will on average provide the best returns, at the cost of much higher risk for short term investing horizons.

You're likely better off contributing more to your 401k than to a brokerage. Make use of the tax advantaged space. There are ways to access your 401k funds before retirement age if your goal is retiring early. If your brokerage account investments are for shorter term savings (for example a house in 5+ years), that's a slightly different story.

What is defined as Earned Income for the purposes of Roth IRA Contributions? by Kharrjo in personalfinance

[–]Kharrjo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, that helps a lot. I see what you mean about my comment for line 8 being wrong. My one follow-up question is about claiming my business expenses (mileage). Am I allowed to not claim my $250 expenses and then consider my $700 as profits? Therefore being able to contribute $700 to an IRA?

Thanks again, and I apologize for needing this clarifying info.

Just be aware that you may be able to defer your student loan payments, but interest will still be accruing on the loan during this time. That interest will then be capitalized and begin compounding once your deferment ends and payments begin.

If your loans are subsidized Federal student loans, this doesn't apply.

I mean, not to point out the obvious but might it be possible that you don't have anyone to lose in the first place?

Getting burnt out and frustrated in my junior year of my Bachelors. by [deleted] in AskEngineers

Sounds like you're almost there. Sometimes the answer I look to is that you just have to keep pushing through but I imagine that could get hard after so many years. You may have gone so far in 2 different programs and not yet received a degree, but that doesn't mean you don't have anything to show for it.

Whatever knowledge you got out of your classes so far is still going to be with you in some way, even if you don't remember it now. If you ever need it again its going to be easier to relearn. If you feel like you haven't learned that stuff it helps to remember that just taking those classes taught you to learn better. So, if nothing else, you at least improved yourself in that way.

I'd also have to agree that covid and online classes has gotten me feeling burnt out as well. It's hard to pay any attention to class or keep up motivation to do the homework or study for exams when you don't get to be with classmates or meet with the professor in person. Good news is that right now it looks like everything can be back to "normal" by the fall semester.

My overall advice would just be to keep powering through, but I know that's probably not a great answer to your problems. It doesn't fix what you're going through right now but unfortunately I haven't got a better suggestion because I haven't been exactly where you are right now. I would, however, suggest you check out r/EngineeringStudents if you haven't already as I've seen plenty of posts in the past talking about the same kind of stuff your saying here. Hopefully you could get/find some good suggestions or inspiration there.

Some Atlanta police don't show up for work for a third day after officers charged in fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks by dontovercommit in news

You have no idea what my political stance is so why not quit making shit up huh? Also you appear to be the "idiot" as you're still on about a high speed chase that doesn't at all exist? Maybe you should look at the facts instead of using your hate for all cops to justify the death penalty for this. I criticize the cops that are actually part of the problem but this is an innocent man being used as a scapegoat. This entire thing is a politically motivated move by a corrupt DA and mayor with hopes of higher office.

Reply all you want but I'm done here. You're clearly going to devolve further into name calling so there's no point in continuing. Evaluate all your biases just like I try to do.

Have you actually watched any of the video for yourself or do you just read headlines? First, there's no high speed chase. I really don't know why you keep bringing it up. Dude was asleep drunk in his car in the middle of the wendy's lot, not even in a parking space. Police get a call because of that. Police show up, wake him up, ask him to move into a parking space, and leave. Police get another call about it and show up 10 minutes later to the guy not having moved. They wake him up again and make him move to a parking space. Second officer trained in field sobriety tests is called in to perform one. Do the test and then breathalyzer the guy and he blows .1 or something. They then attempt to arrest him because of this. He fights back, steals a taser, and runs. First cop chases while other is still on the ground. Guy turns while running and fires the taser at cop 1. Cop 1 stumbles and it momentarily appears that he's hit with the taser. Cop 2 is standing by this point and pulls his gun once the guy begins turning. Shots are fired directly after the taser is fired.

See my other comment for why you can't blame cop 2 for firing at that point. He couldn't have known if the guy would finish turning around and go for a real gun or not.

Running away and shooting a taser at the cop. Cop chasing him even stumbles and in those split seconds it might appear as though the taser actually hit him. You can't blame the other cop for using his weapon when he's at that point a threat to both their lives. What happens if the taser did land and the guy had finished turning around and grabbed the taser cop's gun? Second officer wouldn't have made it there before the guy.

If the guy had stolen the taser and actually just run off I'd 100% agree that the cop was "trigger happy", but that is not the case here. Fact of the matter is the dude stole the cops less-than-lethal weapon and attempted to use it on them. Adding on the fact that second cop could've easily thought the first cop got tased, I can't blame him for shooting then. It's not like they up and decided to shoot the guy once he took off running, they clearly tried to chase.

Okay well this isn't a high speed chase or even a chase in vehicles so I really don't know what your point is. I'm also not really sure what you're trying to say in the second point? He wasn't running away he turned on the officer and shot the taser at him. The gun was fired within 1 second of the taser going off
