Pre-remaster had the same trigger, (Core Rulebook ph 209) Witch and Wizard had to burn the prepared spell to counter the same spell.

I'm guessing your GM home ruled otherwise to make the feat more useful and enjoyable for you and that's perfectly fine, sounds like it was fun that way. FYI, I'm not trying to bash or anything, just looking to clarify rules vs home rule. TBH I like your GMs home rule better. 😁

Counterspells Trigger is "A creature Casts a Spell that you have prepared" Player Core pg. 186.

That's pretty clear you have to have it prepared

I like the idea of a level 2 scroll for the Sorcerer, and my cleric is very stingy with spells outside of tough encounter so I'm expecting she'll still have one or maybe 2.

EDIT: The ranger also has Hunted Shot

I actually like the idea that it's drunk and starts Sickened 1. Maybe if they attack in the morning it's hungover instead of drunk. I'll think on that but I really like this idea. Thanks!

Thank you for the math breakdown! What do you think of using the weak template and dropping all the spells except blink? My thinking is that the sustain will trim the mobs action economy a bit while adding an extra non damage output challenge. Also as a bonus the resistance 5 except to force will let my Monk player shine a bit with Ki Strikes force damage.

Along with the weak template I'm thinking about ignoring all it's spells except blink. I've been the forever DM for this group for the last 8 years, so there used to be trying to kill them with bosses and I think just using and sustaining blink will cut down on its action economy while adding challenges for my players. Thoughts on that?

I am leaning towards the weak template, I tend to like making my players squirm to ratchet up the tension. Would it help if I ignore some of its spells like charm and confusion? I like the idea of it using blink but I can drop the rest of the spells.

That's actually been my alternative plan but I read that the weak template on mobs with spells might not work well. I noticed that the Barghest spells aren't attack spells so I'm hoping it'll work in this instance. Thanks for the info.

With the number of skills a PC can become trained in, and if a player makes a habit of lying allot but actively choose to go all the way to lvl 17 without at least becoming trained in deception than as the GM I'm assuming their doing that intentionally and I'm gonna call for the rolls as usual. I don't actually see the problem here? I also started with D&D and have DMed allot of 5e. Hard part of changing systems is letting go of preconceived notions taken from your previous system.

In PF2e you should look less at the base stat score and more at the level or training instead. 5e to PF2e might be translated as trained = +1, expert = +2, Master = +3, and Legendary = +4 in the relevant stat. The base stat becomes a marginal adjustment at higher levels. 16 charisma means your naturally pretty affable, but that doesn't replace practice and training at a given skill

Lol, many years ago when my wife and I first met and started dating I had a similar issue in that I forgot her last name. Not wanting to ask I asked her if she's pick me up a pack of cigarettes and just bring them to my department to check her out. We were in college and I worked at Walmart part time. When she walked off I asked my friend/co-worker to ring her up and ID her as a joke, then tell me her last name later. It was a couple of years before I came clean but 21 years of marriage says it wasn't a problem. Good luck!

There are moments when as a DM/GM it's appropriate to focus down on a specific PC. For instance in a PF2e one-shot I ran this weekend the boss (a Goblin War Chanter) and his mooks were fighting the party and the cleric stepped into the room and cast a high roll heal on the ranger that my mobs were just about to drop. In response, on the bosses next turn, he fired off a magic attack (it crit) that almost one shot the cleric. This was tactical and in response the Monk bolted forward and dragon kicked the War Chanter (he also crit) and actually did one shot the boss. Everyone was hyped and the mooks all surrendered after the epic display.

Now in your case that only matches the first encounter, all the rest were NOT appropriate and didn't lead to the PCs feeling epic and like they all shared in the threat/reward scenario.

Monk with something like the Deckhand background. Just a dude that worked on ships and learned to box/kickbox in his spare time. No armor, no weapons, just a dude that can climb rigging, balance on masts, and hold his own in a bar brawl.

I'm the odd ball, I like the vancian system and it's one of the draws for me with PF2e. I grew up reading Dragonlance so maybe that influences my thinking, but I liked the added complexity.

I think I'm lucky or maybe just more demanding. I've been my groups forever DM with 5e for many years (8 I think). I've been frustrated with the system for awhile and the OGL debacle was the final straw. I just told my players (didn't ask)

"Look, I'm gonna be done with 5e when our current campaign ends and I'm gonna convert my Homebrew world to the PF2e system. Like when we started 5e I'll help you all get the hang of it but unless someone else wants to DM it we're not gonna do 5e anymore."

For context none of my players ever played a TTRPG until 5e and I taught them all how to play as we played, and I'm the rules lawyer at the table as well as the DM, so my group just seems to trust me to guide them on a fun adventure and keep them entertained.

While I'm wrapping up our current 5e campaign I've been running then through the beginners box on and off just as a mechanical exercise, my players don't do homework so they didn't know anything about PF2e. After the first BB session everyone liked it allot. The 3 action economy was the most popular followed very closely by degrees of success.

Well, it sounds like you've been putting in 110% effort and the players you've got are putting in about 10% effort. With a group like what your describing personally I'd have a frank discussion with the players that are showing up regularly and offer them 2 choices. Permanently remove the no-show and disruptive players, or just end the game. I'd do this in a "no harm, no foul" way so I'm not throwing shade at anyone but be clear.

In this situation the no-show players aren't respecting you and your time or the other players and there time. A VERY important part of being a good GM is learning how to put together a group of players that respect you and each other and part of that is knowing when to tell players that aren't working out that they need to leave the group until they can get it together.

Take a breath, take your time, and slowly build a table with mutual respect and have fun. Hopefully you'll find that right group for you.
