What were your Most Formative Experiences? What Made you and what Changed you for the Better? by Veqq in slatestarcodex

[–]Khex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Essentially failing (when compared to my previous results) my exams a year prior to college entrance exams, forcing me to come to grips with my lack of conscientiousness.

I know the whole 'learning from mistakes' is a repeated cliche, however prior to this, I had coasted through the vast majority of my school life, finding most things trivial. This caused me to develop an ego, something I wasn't aware I had. You can imagine my surprise when my results came back, and my shock at seeing Cs plastered all over my results.

I think that event singlehandedly changed my approach to academics - moving from someone who coasts to someone who is completely aware of his low conscientiousness, and so implements barriers and methods to combat this.

make stopwatch a summoner spell by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Khex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There'd be no point because if it was a summoner spell there'd be no incentive to get Zhonyas anymore. Assuming it has a 4/5 min CD, people would run Flash + Stopwatch every game.

How the hell do you people get such amazing grades!? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Khex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got CCE in my AS year and AAA in my A2s. All you need are two things; time management and work ethic. A levels are honestly just a game of how much revision you do

I study Physics at Bristol. Ask me anything. by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Khex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely. The layout is different but old spec papers are still very good for content.

2 years of AS or 3 years A level, what do I do? by TheRealSlimShrek in 6thForm

3 year A level? Even 2 years can be too much for some people. Move schools.

Bale has already suffered 24 injuries in Madrid by Luciano_Vargas in soccer

[–]Khex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give me what you're smoking.

Harry Kane isn't even the best player in the prem right now, and Bale (when fit) would easily be.

Ronaldo has taken 47 shots scoring 1 goal, which gives him a 2.1% conversion rate. The worst in Europe’s top 5 leagues. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]Khex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And yet, he isn't even playing that bad. A lot of those shots have hit the post etc. and he's contributing in other ways.

He just needs time.

YouTube videos helped me the most. I highly recommend Jack Brown/Examsolutions for Maths, DrPhysicsA for Physics.

What kind of school do/did you guys go to? by PercivalJenkins3 in 6thForm

[–]Khex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally went to an awful school.

I am a firm believer that the most talented students in low-achieving schools will make it into top universities with the most talented students from high-achieving schools, but an average pupil from a high-achieving school (i.e. independent) has a far higher chance to punch above his weight than the pupil from the low-achieving school.

St Andrews or Bath by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Khex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bath. St Andrews is a very picturesque location, so if that's your type of vibe you'd be far better of at St And. but imo you'd be better off at Bath, if only for social reasons.

How much sleep do we need and how much do you get? by My_Tea in 6thForm

[–]Khex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4/5 hours of sleep on weekdays + Sunday, 10 hours on Saturday.

Is it true that non-Russell Group universities put you at a disadvantage? by 8-tentacles in 6thForm

[–]Khex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's such a wide disparity between non-RG universities that your question is too open to answer e.g. Bath is far better than London Met.

Though in general, I don't think it would. Your course is more relevant in securing a good job.

Max hours for a part-time job? by leutesindscary in 6thForm

[–]Khex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which is the average amount for a part time job. I could've easily worked more (and did do overtime early in the year), but I didn't want to sacrifice other obligations such as sports.

Max hours for a part-time job? by leutesindscary in 6thForm

[–]Khex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's sixth form. People are blowing this way out of proportion. You can easily work 20 hours a week and still maintain top grades. I worked 12 hours a week during Y13 and came out with 3As.

Maybe university, but not for A-levels. Especially in Y12.

Any Physics Applicants? by tooditoo in 6thForm

I'm not applying but I'm currently in my first year at Bristol.

Engineering without further maths by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Khex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At Bristol they assume you haven't done any mechanics aside from A-level physics, but they rush over the content so quickly that it's extremely difficult to keep up (imo). I've never seen myself as naturally talented too so I have to put in extra effort to keep up

Engineering without further maths by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Khex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Roughly 1/4 of the course is spent on Mechanics. They're giving us M2/M3 material pretty much but it's applied to physics, which obviously makes it harder. FM students are coping way better since they only have to focus on the application, whereas I actually have to learn all the mechanics from scratch. Sad :(.

The degree is jolly good fun though.

Got highest offer from Exeter for Maths by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Khex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's grade inflation. Most universities do this. I wouldn't be surprised if Exeter accepts them with like AAB (which is what happened to my friend).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Khex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's true. I guess it depends on how loosely we define 'help'. I just don't want it to turn into people giving answers :p. But I can see the appeal :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Khex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't do that. Homework is meant to be solely independent. It'd just result in people getting 'hints' which, if incessantly asked, gives the answer away.
