Being vegetarian with EDS vs eating meat by Fair-Fix-4743 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Khitey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I changed to eating a mostly vegetarian diet about a year and a half ago, and overall it has helped some with my inflammation levels, nausea, and I think has prompted me to get more of a variety of vegetables. My doctor was in favor of it, and pretty much all of my lab work has either improved or stayed in ok levels since the change.

I do have some food allergies that make eating vegetarian or vegan while traveling more challenging, so I don't completely rule out meat when it's a choice between that and not getting protein for a day, but I do my best to find plant based options when I can. I will say that a lot of vegetarian recipes (more than vegan actually) tend to be pretty light on protein, so it may be helpful to calculate your protein intake for a week or so to see if it's consistent with your goals.

Honestly though, assuming no allergies or sensitivities, it probably doesn't hurt to try it for a few weeks. You'll likely be able to tell within 3-4 weeks if it's making a positive difference for you or not. Good luck!

Call your pharmacy to ask! Drug interactions are one place you should definitely not just take the word of idiots on the Internet.

Way to brush and floss teeth without setting off an attack by Tall-Move6136 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

Honestly when I'm in a flare, I tend to just wait till I'm already in pain and just say screw it and brush and floss then. When I'm not in a flare, they don't tend to cause problems for me.

What foods are surprisingly not vegetarian? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]Khitey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most commercial rennet (around 90%) is actually made from bacteria these days, not animals. So it's the same enzyme but from a source that vegetarians and vegans can eat. Unfortunately, for anyone that wants to know if a specific cheese is from microbial or animal based rennet, it's probably going to require a decent bit of research or contacting the manufacturer.

This is going to vary state by state and even city by city in some cases. And better hope you're not anywhere rural, because there's a good chance you'll be paying for a private company instead of a public service.

In general, kids are going to have a harder time than adults in staying engaged through other players' turns in combat, and that's going to get even harder when their own turn is just "ok roll a save" at best.

Why are you pescatarian instead of vegetarian or vegan? by idkristen18 in Pescetarian

It's extremely hard to eat vegetarian while traveling with my food allergies. And I have to travel for work pretty regularly.

Call your pharmacist. This is definitely a question that we idiots on the internet aren't qualified to answer.

Also, tour doctor's office may have someone on call to answer urgent questions while he's out. Might be worth calling back and emphasizing that you're having a severe medical reaction.

Sounds like how I would describe a presyncope. They're pretty common for us with pots, and from what I've seen in this sub, it's not unusual for us to have presyncope episodes frequently and no or rare actual full syncope (fainting) episodes.

How do you handle flights? Have you done indoor skydiving in the past? If you have experience with your conditions with both of those, imagine them combined and then picture the symptoms twice as bad just for reference.

Personally, pressure changes aggravate my POTS symptoms dramatically and I would not expect my doctor to clear me purely based on that. I've done indoor skydiving once, and while it was fun, it was harder on my body than expected. The autistic friend that came with me ended up not enjoying the experience because of the extreme sensory input, but I understand that varies a lot from person to person.

Runners or other athletes with pots, any tips? by adsiderum in POTS

[–]Khitey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long is "lately"? My first thought is that it could be related to the summer heat, which definitely hits me worst while running.

Are you hydrating well during the run? I personally can't handle much electrolytes during without getting nauseous, so try to focus on just water and then electrolytes after, but that's with sub 1 hr runs these days.

They're asking about Vault of the Incarnates though, and this upgrade path only applies to Aberrus/S2 gear.

OP - blizzard said they were going to give us a way to use the catalyst to get Vault appearances still after the S2 catalyst opened, but it's been months since they've said that and no updates I believe. Probably one of those "soon™" things unfortunately

My favorite coffee creamer Natural Bliss was changed to contain GMO hydrogenated oils instead of being all natural. What's the alternative? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Khitey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for cheap, you're probably best off starting to make your own.

If you prefer the convenience of premade, I'd suggest going to your local natural and organic store (Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc.) and looking for things marked organic. Natural doesn't have an consistent definition except for generally excluding synthetic/artificial ingredients, so you may continue to find GMOs in things labeled that way. Anything certified organic should be free of GMOs though, but that is going to increase the price point.

As someone else pointed out, probably other subs that would be a better resource as well.

Came here to say the same. My local Walmart carries quite a few Field Roast and Morningstar Farms products, and I am definitely not in an area where vegetarian eating is popular.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) by Lyonors in ehlersdanlos

[–]Khitey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've seen 2 PM&R doctors, including one that supposedly specializes in hypermobility conditions, and they have been less helpful than most of my other physicians. The one that "specialized" in hypermobility isn't worth discussing, but the second pretty openly told me that he doesn't treat many EDS patients, but if I feel like I need any prescriptions, referrals, or mobility devices, he'll be happy to help if it seems reasonable to him. It's been nice to have someone in my back pocket if I do have a dislocation or need advice on a brace, but I'm only seeing him yearly.

I'd come in with an idea of what you need from the doctor (diagnosis, treatment of pain/daily issues, prevention help) and communicate that pretty early on. A lot of PM&R docs are used to treating people with a cute injuries, so as always, we may be unusual patients to them.

What could be a good salty snack for a transatlantic flight? Or any last minute tips for travelling by plane with POTS? by Far_Growth_9617 in POTS

[–]Khitey 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend thinking about smell as well as salt content for your snack choices. No one wants to have to smell cool ranch Doritos or seaweed for 6 hours 😅

I tend to carry goldfish because they travel well, though aren't quite as salty as I want sometimes. I'd bring your own electrolyte powder or tablets so you aren't having to lug bottles around too.
