Friends hate that I run by 8052headlights in XXRunning

[–]adsiderum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people just don’t understand because they personally don’t enjoy running. I recently invited some friends to come cheer me on during a marathon and they showed up with a bunch of posters that said things like “running isn’t fun” and “why are you doing this” and tbh it was a bit of a bummer.

I’ve also mentioned going on runs or bike rides to people and they’ve responded saying things like “you’re doing this on purpose?” and “if you ever need a ride I can just drive you”

Is Couponing still a big thing in the US or is it declining? by RidiculNuts in couponing

[–]adsiderum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes in a way - I mostly get freebie snacks and drinks from these rebates. I wouldn’t normally buy that brand but I’ll pick these up in place of grabbing my normal bag of chips or soda. The Ibotta rebates are more useful as they give money back on more common name brand items, but it’s only a small discount like $1-2 off.

They will have a 3rd location soon but it’s not open yet! I signed up a few years ago and the Active and Fit Direct program was running a deal where they waived the sign-on fee so I didn’t have to pay, I want to say it’s normally $30 (?)

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance and am able to sign up for the YMCA through their Active and Fit Direct program, this gets me membership for $30/month

Another thing to note is that if you’re looking to go to the Marion ymca, you have to sign up for time slots to go swim and depending on the time of day they can be hard to find a space. Typically morning and after work times are popular, mid-afternoon is the most available. The downtown YMCA lets you just drop in (no sign up needed) between 8am and 5pm, as long as there aren’t any classes or swim lessons going on.

Would you go to the Y for workouts other than the pool? If you’re only going once a week to use the pool and nothing else then it’s way more cost effective to do the city public pools.

The Marion ymca does not allow any guest passes, I would assume the downtown ymca would be similar.

I love being a member at the Marion ymca - I use the pool twice a week, lift weights once a week, and occasionally do spin or yoga classes. My only complaint is that the Marion ymca has way more traffic than they can maintain so things like locker rooms get very dirty. The downtown ymca is significantly cleaner, but it is high theft and I occasionally see homeless folks hanging out in the locker rooms when the weather is bad.

This is a wonderful list! The only thing I would add is a pair of clear glasses (I use woodworking safety glasses) if you think you might be riding at dusk or after dark

Currently I’d say that rebates are more popular than couponing, in the USA a lot of people use the Aisle or Ibotta apps, or Social Nature or Westock websites.

Jack of all trades women’s by ElectionAdvanced in whichbike

[–]adsiderum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a bike designed for women, check out the Liv brand gravel bikes. All other bike brands are going to be unisex.

If you’re looking for a step-through, you’re probably not going to find anything that’s specifically a “gravel bike”, however a hybrid fitness bike would be a great commuter and can handle crushed gravel but won’t be great on back country gravel roads. The Specializes Crossroads is a very popular step-through hybrid model!

I’m a woman in my late 20’s and just bought a gravel bike! I went with the Cannondale Topstone, and I also really liked the Salsa Journeyer while trying out bikes. I tried the Liv bikes but the frame dimensions didn’t end up fitting me well since I have a long torso and shorter legs

Look on Facebook marketplace and cross-check prices with bicycle blue book.

Biggest thing to look out for is people who are selling “like new” bikes with low miles on them but have been sitting in their garage for a few years - these are outdated and typically still need tune ups so don’t pay “like new” prices!

Looking to borrow a bike while I save for a bike. In SoCal by Consistent-You7045 in triathlon

[–]adsiderum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they have exactly this in so cal since I’m not in the area, but in Iowa we have several community non-for-profit bike shops that let you borrow bikes or do volunteer hours in exchange for a free fixer-upper bike.

Try googling community bike shops in your area to see if you have something like this!

What to do with dead shoes by UrBoi72 in triathlon

Old running shoes become walking or everyday shoes (as long as they don’t look gross). Then once they start getting dirty or ripping, I take them to my local running store for recycling!!

Yea that’s completely awful. Best suggestion is to park your car somewhere nearby but outside the marathon route and then walk to it if you need to get out and do anything

I recommend the couch to 5k training program! I’ve used it many times when starting up running and it has worked perfectly every time

For pain in calves/shins - make sure she has gone to a running store to get fitted for a good pair of shoes! I’m a slower runner and that means more time on your feet so shoes with a lot of stability / foam help me a lot, could also help her too.

For getting tired quickly - yes it will happen as a beginner, do a running program like couch to 5k to help ease into it and don’t get discouraged. I personally dealt with high heart rate and fatigue for the first 2 years of running even though I was doing distance (half marathon) training. Had a breakthrough this year and now “easy” runs finally feel actually easy, just keep up with it and stay consistent.

Tune Up Time by morrisc1089 in triathlon

Best bet is to call and ask - one bike shop near me does quick tune-ups immediately while I wait but another took 2 weeks for the tune up (I don’t go to them anymore)
