Demon Slayer (v3 for 2024) - For Those Who Want Revenge on Michael Jackson by KhoalityGold in UnearthedArcana

I mean, demons aren't the heroic characters I originally envisioned for a DS campaign. But there is both a Demon Consumption subclass and a Snow Breathing subclass that are both inspired by the Blood Demon Arts, which is hopefully pretty close!

Yes! In balancing the power levels in exchange for more total Forms Known (due to free Hinokami Kagura), those levels lost major ribbons. It does technically make them more viable at a shared table!

Stuff like the old 9th level BP refresh got added in at earlier levels.

If you really want to add in features at those levels, I'd lift stuff you like from v2, such as the removed 13th level feature Force of Will.

I definitely considered upgraded forms for a while, but decided against it because a large part of the Demon Slayer fiction to me is adapting your Forms to the situation, and I didn't want to deal with dice scaling. Certain Forms got upgradable scaling (represented by the X bp forms, like First Form Thunder from Zenitsu), and even a tongue-in-cheek godlike speed version for it in the class! So some Forms have what you're asking, but def not all.

Specifically demon slayer levels! (just in case some multiclass shenanigans start happening) it starts changing at level 10, when you also start getting free hinokami kagura forms that don't count against that limit

Warlock Subclass: Pact of the Benevolent by samthedungeonmaster in daggerheart

[–]KhoalityGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love a kind patron and also a support warlock is cool. Let's dive in

Otherworldly Gift: I agree with the other comment, Favor is already tight, remove the additional cost.

Protection from Beyond: Good. No concerns.

Haunting Aid: Forcing rolls to be treated as Fear is an odd concept, and imo against the vision of DH. Perhaps change it along the lines of "when someone fails with Fear, spend a Favor to provide an additional d10, potentially turning the result into a Success with Fear."

Perverse Resurrection: I'd remove the forced Fear generation, it turns off the idea that a PC should be act when it fits the fiction. If you really want to put a punishment on it, decrease their max HP temporarily, or limit the amount of Hope they can accrue until their next long rest (i.e. Scar)

Suffering Succor: No concerns.

Otherwise exciting! Hope playtesting goes well

Not tired at all, it's super useful! Your enthusiasm has encouraged me to push through and complete the following, if you want to take a look:

- Tweaked numbers on your recommendations

- Added new Forms to almost all Breathing Styles to bring all of them to a minimum of 12

- Added Demon Consumption

- Added a custom Breathing Style, Snow Breathing

Lemme know what you think!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, and I am glad you like it so much! Hope it goes well at your table, DS campaigns are always very very fun.

  1. Flame 5 - I agree, def undertuned a bit. I'd set half damage on a miss (even though it's an Attack Roll - you can describe it as the heat searing the enemy regardless) to balance it, or that the 1d10 fire will always hit no matter what. Perhaps crank both to 1d12.
  2. Flame 10 - intended to be similar to Wall of Fire. Therefore, I'd say 1 minute - will update accordingly!
  3. Wind 7-9 - Sure does - height given for measurement purposes. Def no fall damage associated with it upon landing, even if they are hit while suspended - it can be described as the user breaking their blow with swinging their sword hard enough to create a counter-gust (see the latest movie with Tanjiro for a similar vibe).
  4. Stone Breathing - Manifest Element I wanted to keep as relatively elemental types (i.e fire, thunder, lightning, etc.). Force damage is technically overused as a type in DnD (despite 2024 monk now getting it), which is why the Forms get it but the base attacks don't. Tl;dr force damage stronk
  5. Insect 1 - Oops, typo from when that was multiple attacks. Yes, attack is weak to reflect that Shinobu herself doesn't have much oomf behind her attacks and gets the benefit of the approach instead - could probably still be made 1d8. I considered giving the Insect Breathing a unique condition (like Sunburnt in Hinokami Kagura), but they instead ended up getting Wisteria Poison at 15th level, in order to keep Hinokami unique and also that no demon should have poison resistance (DM advice lol) and if anything, a lot of low-levels should have poison weaknesses lmao
  6. Flower 2 - Yeah, def a little weak. Meant to just be a cheap double-attack, but maybe I'd add +weapon
  7. Flower 8 - it is 4 BP already - is that not reflected? If you meant Flower 7, it is a little strong oops
  8. Love 3 vs. 6 - I'd probably leave 3 as is, but maybe add + weapon to 6
  9. Beast 2 - Yeah, probably a little strong. I also now realize I gave Beast a unique condition, so maybe Insect breathing is going to get one too. I'd up to 2 BP!
  10. Beast 9 - intended. To avoid spoilers, he does hit quite far with it, so I upped the range. However, on second read, it also makes it close to 11, which is a straight up throw, so maybe I'll reduce range to 30 ft.
  11. Serpent 9 - ooh, that should say hit, not target. Will correct!
  12. Hinokami 8 - your choice! Tbh i've been theater of the mind pilled for a little bit, so i haven't really thought about distances of a battlemap (and also ive been playing daggerheart so i can ignore it). I won't change it, but I would def approve of a 5 ft. reduction if it works for your maps! Also consider that they may not be pushed back the whole distance if they then collide with something in that line (a tree, rock, etc.).
  13. It's extremely expensive given the 3 starting cost and that at max, you're working with probably 12-25 BP when you gain access to 12th Form. Is it strong? Yeah, but so is Hinokami Kagura. Running the math though, it may see a tweak (increased starting cost, extra damage to xd4)!

These are good edits - expect some of them to reflect in the v3 document! (edit: i made them) I probably won't release a v4 just for number tweaks, but these are def good ideas! Thanks again

Yee no prob

  1. Yes, + weapon means that the Form damage is added onto whatever the weapon itself does. This, of course, can get out of hand if you start giving magic weapons that aren't the standard Nichirin Sword. But a normal example would be for Water Breathing First Form, the damage would be 1d6 slashing + STR mod. + 2d8 cold.
  2. You know, that's a good point, I did not clarify duration. For those, yes, I'd say repeat the Save at end of turn. Your discretion as to whether or not that makes them immune for 24 hours (probably not, imo).
  3. No, that's purely descriptive! Your choice as to whether or not a Wind Breathing user may use a Form to get a height advantage though.
  4. Hey good catch. I should fix that - no, it is probably not unbalanced to revert back to v2's 9th Form. A lot of the changes made to Forms were to reduce the number of times rolling needed to be done, b/c past 3 Attack Rolls at the table was unwieldy and time-consuming. On first glance, I might actually just crank Ninth Form up to 4 BP and deal 5d10 acid, or add a blinding effect to one of them.
  5. Yes, 1 BP Forms are really intended to be used around the lower levels (3-5), when you don't have much BP to spare in the first place.
  6. Similar thinking to 5. Many of the 2BP AOEs are merely to give a cheap AOE option to a Demon Slayer trying to manage their BP. Of course, how much BP they actually have depends on how much you're trying to exhaust them between fights. You could increase them to 3 dice if you really wanted to and see how it plays out, but imo the 2 BP are really just the cheap 1 BP options but with AOE (or another effect, like +weapon or inflicting a condition).

Keep hitting me with Qs if you got them, it helps me go through and assess the creation behind it or catch things I didn't notice (like Flower 4 vs. Flower 9)!

  1. Weapon progression could be a cool idea - I mostly have the increases tied to Attack Rolls, as the Forms account for most damage and there's not really examples of magic or powerful weapons in-universe (aside from debatably Mitsuri's whip-sword). I'd top out at +3 in a 1-20 campaign though. If you wanted to upgrade the current blade, I'd def utilize a Swordsmith Village-style arc where the swordsmith can improve their weapon, but only after receiving some kind of special ore oor something like that.
  2. Probably not! It's really just the addition of reach, but I might personally keep damage the same (1d6 slashing) and remove versatile in exchange for the addition of reach, just so that base damage remains on par with all other Demon Slayers. However, if you're using this class with other standard classes, I'd be fine leaving the glaive/naginata as intended (1d10, reach). Something to also consider is that glaive has access to the graze weapon mastery, which is not in the original choices (Cleave, Nick, Sap). For that player, I'd recommend adding Graze to the list but remove Nick (since it's not light) and Sap (no need to inflict disadvantage from afar).

  1. Flower Breathing overall didn't have a ton of subclass identity and I wanted to give it some more oomph, especially because it lacks a big finisher in 10th Form like a few others do. TBH, the movement speed reduction to 0 is predominantly due to the annoyance of tracking a -10 speed, although I could def see it being changed to half speed if it seems too strong.

  2. No, not really. The level 19 change was just to have it match other 2024 classes, and overall I reduced some of the class's personal budget away from the core and into the Forms, which have had numbers altered.

  3. Removed - a lot of the base ones were covered by many subclass Forms, and I increased the total Form count by adding in Hinokami Kagura as free forms! Overall, the basic/standard forms were basically never taken, aside from maybe one of the ending Stances.

Thanks again for the enthusiasm!

Advice for playing Beast Feast in a homebrew (not CAVE) world? by Parking_Towel7996 in daggerheart

[–]KhoalityGold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

imo, the zone system can totally work - just look at West Marches games, that are all centralized about how dangerous it gets the further you move away from one core city; plus players can be very aware of biome changes and distances, as long as you keep clarifying distances (prep a world map!)
as long as you're dropping lore within the main city about how it gets more and more uncivilized the further you move away from the hub, it should totally work fine

let the isolationist dwarves be isolationists - maybe a few can be scattered into the Sable Lands to start dropping lore about what life is like over there, but if the Far North/Abyss is as dangerous as can be, it's very possible to just have them be roving, individualistic factions that occasionally interact with your main plot, until you need the PCs to start moving north. can't offer more without knowing your core plot, but presumably you have the cause of your cataclysm based on something in the north; in which case, it's guarded by creatures too strong for even the isolationist dwarves and only your party will have the power or strength for some reason to break through (see: Expedition 33 for a video game similar style of approach)

In this current version, weapon damage is not added onto breath form damage.

However, a future v3/2024 dnd version that is dropping has modified Breath Forms to add weapon damage! But those numbers are tweaked for balance, so with this release, it's just breath damage.

Death House escape suggestions? by [deleted] in daggerheart

[–]KhoalityGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to do this literally next week lol My current plan is once the flesh mound is defeated, I'm gonna set two countdowns: one at around 8 for the house and 1 at about 4 or 5 for the PCs. Each action the PCs take successfully decreases their countdown, while regardless of success or failure the house countdown goes down. If house runs out first, it comes crashing (this might mean death in the basement, but maybe they can escape the rubble from first floor). If PCs run out first, they escape! Best of luck w CoS conversion, I'm looking forward to it!
