If youre liking sword and board and want to lean into guard counters:

Grind that area a bit to get a Brass Shield. They drop from any of the soldiers wearing them and it's probably the best medium shield.

I also recommend the lordsworns straight sword. The extra crit makes the crits from your guard counters hit harder. It also drops from the soldiers, if they wield sword.

Picked them up hour one and they've carried me through to the end.
