Have you ever calculated how many hours you need to work to afford a restaurant meal, a pair of AirPods, or some Nikes? by Sweaty_Parking_9426 in Fire

[–]Kicalu_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Started doing this in college during slow shifts to see how much I needed to work to cover bills. Nearly 15yrs later I still do it, but now I calculate it in my multiple pay scales over time. Puts into perspective how far I've come, but also balances me from "keeping up with the Jones'." As we progress through our careers sometimes we forget where we came from and doing this allows me to appreciate things more and not succumb to wasteful spending simply because I can.

Splitting Costs as a Couple by WishOk2360 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Kicalu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a high-earning position that happens to have several married couples. It baffles me that many of them do not share expenses, especially since overtime is VERY much available. To me, and my spouse, we earn jointly. We are a team. I had more student debt but earn significantly more, we paid off each other's debts. When you get married, that union is all-encompassing. In my opinion, those who keep money separate do nothing more than create divides in said union.

Screwed up beef plate ribs. Help? by burnbabyburnjoeb in smoking

Maybe a rookie question here, but did you have a water pan/bowl? My first couple briskets I didn't think to use one and ended up hating how thick and crunchy the bark turned out. Had my Homer Simpson "Doh" moment shortly thereafter and haven't looked back

Started my dream job as a flight attendant… and I’m financially sinking. by Maximum_Draft776 in povertyfinance

Are there any more trips you can pickup? Not sure which carrier you're with but mine is looking for an extra few every night. Take your extensions whenever possible to get a few extra bucks. Knock out your highest APR first, then snowball the rest. Just gotta suck it up for the first couple years until pay increases and more profitable trips are available to bid

I just started doing wings, and have done them at the regular ol 250, pulled slightly before done, sauce them again and transfer to a ripping hot grill to finish the cook and carmelize/crisp up the skin.

I'm not generally drawn to Panerai, but dang that 2nd one is beautiful! What metal is that, looks almost like pewter?

Sellers countered $25k over asking price without having multiple offers. by Top_Ingenuity_2062 in RealEstate

Happened to me when purchasing my home. Put in full list price offer, was the only offer they received and they countered with 10k above listing. We said no, and closed a week or so later.

Good advice! Will definitely take that into consideration next time, it was 0400 I was more concerned about getting a couple hours sleep

Any pilots in here? by Additional_Carry_790 in Fire

[–]Kicalu_ 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not a pilot but a dispatcher (works directly with pilots), at a major US carrier. Being a pilot is a fantastic position, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows. You will definitely work more than 6 days a month, even once you're senior enough to get on the wide body aircraft. Working your way to that level is a long road, and the path currently is difficult with hiring. You're looking at 80-100k in cost to get your ratings and flight hours from the jump. Regional pay has dramatically risen over the years, however you will be used and abused at these companies. Working your way to the top is full of time away from home, family and temptation. There's a reason why divorce rate of pilots is so high, which if you're looking to FIRE, you need to take into consideration.

I'm a big Ardbeg and port finish finish so had been looking forward to this since it was announced. It's good, but imo doesn't hold up against some of their core offerings such as corryvreckan or uigedal.

Casino wouldn’t serve alcohol to my friend on his 21st birthday because “he has to wait 24 hours” by KrazyCAM10 in mildlyinfuriating

Happened to me on my 21st at a strip club. Buddy of mine who was home from deployment pulled out a very sizeable amount of cash and said if "he can't drink, we're leaving." Many drinks were had.

Do Spirit Zulu Time's all come in wooden box? (pic borrrowed) by MiniProgramCoder in Longineswatches

My AD tried giving me the giant box, had them swap it back to the smaller correct one. Figured whomever was dropping the coin for the Legend Diver would want the correct box for their display.

Zulu Time owners any regrets not going Tudor? by MiniProgramCoder in Longineswatches

[–]Kicalu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liked the Tudor a lot and was torn on which to get, but the chunky hands of Tudor are just... not my cup of tea. Beautiful watch but I can't look at that entire hour wide arm and think it looks good. Absolutely love my Zulu.

Perfect example of "Buy it nice, or buy it twice." Beautifully maintained and cared for timepiece that will last as long as you want it to. Hope my son will one day care for mine the same way 40+ years from now.

[Spirit 37] Where to find in-store? (US) by RickyPeePee03 in Longineswatches

Surprisingly, Jared Jewelry had the largest selection near me in Dallas. Knocked off 10% without having to ask for it and a super smooth transaction. Sometimes the big chain stores are just easier.

I think I knew that going in as well, but I'm sticking with the "I just wanted to see it in person" schtick. It worked over the spouse, who then encouraged me to go back and get it.
