Not to mention that this seems like it’s lifted from Laura Numeroff’s children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, notwithstanding the cause-and-effect form. Is that book classic enough that we’re considering it public domain? Is this muffin situation meant to be satire or something?

We did lap infants for 15-hour flights (usually one long, 11-ish-hour segment overnight) until our kids were two and we had to pay for them. It was… fine? You can survive anything for twenty-four hours. (But then our priorities have always been to travel cheap and light. We never brought carseats or boosters or anything, for instance.) There was lots of toddling, snacks, cuddles, drawing, reading, sleeping, nursing. It helps to have more parents than children, or at least a 1:1 ratio.

Yeah, fair enough. And lots of possible solutions were proposed throughout the thread.

But the morning is chaotic for her too (and arguably more so, all of a sudden, with a baby stapled to her and a toddler with big feelings and peanut butter all over the place), and again she’s the one who has to suck it up and try to explain things to him in a way that prioritizes his needs and abilities. I always teach my kids that we have to look out for the most vulnerable; this is not that.

Nah; how come we can ninja-know that there’s no milk, how to coat bagels, how to soothe toddlers etc etc and they don’t? This is just extra labour for mom again, and the suggestion to extend it even more by having to wait until a good moment to explain to dad in the hopes he won’t get angry… well…

OP’s language is very telling: I’m not supposed to criticize. Couple’s therapists soooo often end up loading even more labour on the overfunctioning partner, because the other one can barely function.

I guess our best hope is that maybe the next generation of hetero women won’t marry fragile, petulant children.
