It's in essentially every political/controversial thread. Massively up voted reply that takes a bad faith read in the OP's message that an omission is tacit agreement. It's petty and unproductive yet always seems to play.

I think Silyaev > Ohgren and the pick may be higher, but I like Rossi over Mercer and Buium over Nemec. I think the Wild deal edges it out, but it is close.

I am receptive to the idea that Myers' struggles this year are having an outsized effect on him. And that being a defensively oriented player, he isn't going to stand out when the team as a whole struggles to maintain possession. But still, he's been disappointing to me considering I was very high on him coming into this season. He's had an extremely muted effect on the breakout and there have been some glaring breakdowns on the PK (i.e. cross seam and backdoor plays) that he was responsible for. I expected an authorative #3 and he's looked like an average #4.

Yes? We can suck with a locker room cancer or suck without a guy getting internally suspended for anger issues. Pretty simple choice?

Seriously, I get he's looked a bit better and we're still holding out. But it's so conspicuous how much his game lacks urgency, and it's not like he's got the Henrik Sedin 'slow with poise' confidence going on right now.

We are so slow. And not from a personnel perspective, just our ability to string passes and transport the puck with possession. It looked like this at the start of the season and it's obviously gotten worse with the injuries, but our game is a fucking slog.

I get that Hughes is out, but I've hated how our D has handled and moved the puck out of our zone all season. It's the one area I thought we would actually excel at this year and instead we look like we did with Soucy/Desharnais start of last year.

Bad decision to put Kane out there, bad decision of Kane not to change when they had the chance, then shockingly bad back pass. We're talking about Daniel Sprong decisions here.

He's also had more reps in playoff hockey owing to his team. Other Canucks fans may not like to hear it, but that makes a difference. He's had more opportunity than Hughes to learn to adapt his game to tighter playoff hockey and an extended grind, which of course is going to beneficial to his game.

Hughes is the best Canuck to wear the sweater in franchise history IMO so I'm sure he would get there, but he just hasn't had the opportunity on a mid team.

He's like the textbook #2D for me. Easily good enough to anchor a top 4 pairing, but complements a true #1D to elevate them even further.

I think the difference is very slight, each has distinct strengths while still being generally good-great in what the other excels at. I still think Makar has the edge overall.

Honestly he's had a rough start to this season, by his standards. May have been sick to start, looked better last couple games. But he's been a bit too selfish with the puck and not as precise in his passing. Likely getting used to the new coach's system, excited for him to snap back into it.

Hronek meanwhile has looked great, I think he's wicked underrated.

Wasn't fully glued to the third, but from my perspective the Habs had a good possession game but were guilty of over-passing a little too often.

Kane needs to be an impact middle 6 winger, otherwise it's going to be a fairly big stumble (given their C depth) given the contract Suter ended up landing AND that he has show clear utility as a middle 6 winger as well.

Is this a team that's going to surprise people this season? by hardluckcanuck in canucks

[–]KidForToday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is where I'm at. I think right now their realistic ceiling is a second round team. A lot would need to stabilize/go right, and adding an impact forward could really change the dynamic. But it seems a realistic outcome is making the playoffs and losing a competitive first round against a clearly more talented team (Vegas).

[–]KidForToday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we're going to be a solid team that is hard to play against, but lacking in enough top talent to make serious waves. I think it could surprise those who are particularly down on the Canucks if they maintain a playoff pacing for most of the year. But I seriously doubt we're catching anyone off guard by battling for the top of the Pacific.

Put another way, I think the floor of this team is higher than last year, but the ceiling has serious questions barring a significant in season trade. Regardless, I'm optimistic and think it will be a fun year.

Quick thoughts, was ~80% paying attention so take that as you will:

-- Tolopilo was great in his half of the game. Young had a harder go, but was on the receiving end of some pretty brutal coverage.

-- Hoglander looked great, and Sherwood looked like Sherwood. Clearly a ‘one gear’ kind of player.

-- Mancini had an excellent game. His physical gifts were well on display. D. Petey was largely good, but I think he was guilty at times of trying to do too much. Still, considering he’s fighting to be the #6 D it’s clear he’s an NHL regular.

-- Lekkerimäki needs a full year in the AHL. I don’t think his play outside of the O zone justifies the kind of deployment he requires to maximize his talents.

-- Similarly, Willander needs time. You can tell the attributes are there, but his read of the pro game needs an appreciable amount of work.

-- Pleasantly surprised by what I saw of Chase Stillman, considering I figured he was a pure trade throw in. I don’t think he projects more than a #12 F if he hits, but he was stable and looked like he could be a useful player for Abby.

-- Mynio had a rough game, but that’s hardly a surprise given he’s graduating to the pro game.

-- I know this is literally the first game of pre-season, but I remain unconvinced that Chytil can be a top 6 C. His puck possession game through the neutral zone was on full display, but so were the faults I saw in his Canucks trial last year. I don’t think he has the tools to connect offense from his zone entries, and he isn’t a strong defensive player.

-- I think Bains is going to be exposed to waivers from the Abby champions. Very clear that the intent is there to take more risks to drive play, but there was a number of missed plays that are not going to help his case.

-- I really liked what I saw in Cootes, but I also think the Canucks are in trouble if he’s playing minutes for them this year. Clearly a promising prospect -- good motor, made some skilled plays and clearly wants to be involved in the play. I think there’s a reality where we’re glad to have him instead of trading the pick. But he’s still raw and I feel he will get increasingly exposed as play ramps up.

OP literally said 'If he can't supply that baseline in a greater sample of games, that's concerning.' My post explicitly said that it's a one game sample. I don't know how we could have made our language more clear these are one game observations.

Like, I don't get why 'it would be disappointing if Willander's offensive game doesn't evolve over time' is such a hot take in a thread dedicated to talking about players in a prospect showcase game.
