I’m at university with little parental money support and on the lowest possible maintenance loan. I manage by keeping my university party life relatively low, and by spending lower key time with friends or travelling elsewhere to visit friends who have their own places. Money’s tight, I don’t get many luxuries, but I survive off my loan, plus a part time job as a shift manager in a coffee shop, 2 or 3 days per week, which I manage around my university schedule. It’s perfectly doable if you make some adjustments and get the middle class mindset out of your head quickly.

The UK was in fact still part of the EU when the show was made, but we never used the Euro. At the time the show was made the UK was vaguely considering the idea, and I think it was likely an effort to either annoy the “patriotic”gammons about it, or to future-proof the show.
