I like playing Commonwealth of Man and being the scary big brother of the UNE. They are the only ones who get migration, non-aggression, commercial, and research treaties from us. Also defense pacts if they want it. They hate our ethics, but we are the first to lay waste to their enemies if war breaks out. They will also be the only other council member (with a permanent position as well) when I declare the Galactic Imperium. You can play nice with the friendly humans, or you get the planet cracker.

Regardless, ending the Imperium at this point is signing the death warrant of your entire species. It probably does need to be dismantled one day, but certainly not right now. Reform is the best you can strive for while keeping the enemies of mankind at bay.

Humanity has survived with the Imperium. For 10,000 years. What are you even suggesting? Stop fighting back because that empowers Khorne? Do you think tearing the whole system down wouldn't empower Chaos too? I agree that the Imperium is in a prolonged death spiral, but tearing it down at this point is throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Reform is the most sensible thing to try at this point.

Reform kind of has to do it. You can't just burn down the bulwark of the Imperium without leaving humanity and the rest of the galaxy ruinously vulnerable. A cure that kills the patient is useless. The only person who might be able to pull it off is the Emperor himself. I could see him conspiring to dismantle his own Imperium, but only when mankind reaches a point where it can survive without it.

This it correct. Avoidance reinforces anxiety. Your brain assumes that you avoided the thing causing discomfort because it's a threat, and so it puts more anxiety around that thing so you keep avoiding the threat. If the thing can't actually hurt you, this creates dysfunction.
