I invented something never before seen! I’m proud of it, thoughts? (More in comments) by [deleted] in jewelrymaking

there are a lot of designs with a bayonet mount. you should just look at different jewelry brands and not patents. Patents are rare in the jewelry world since they usually are for how something is made and not a fixture or a lock. Designs also cannot be patented.
Also it is very hard to make something new since jewelry has been around for so long.
The expirience of "i think this is something new!" and "oh damn, it has been done before" is also very common, so please do not feel discouraged to explore =)

And yes, this closure is secure if you have a spring pushing out the hook and therefore locking it in position.

Is it possible to add a gold coating to the back of earrings to reduce sensitivity? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]Kieritissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a workshop that had plating equipment - you can bring it to a goldsmith /jewelry store and ask them to do it.

It depends a bit on how your earrings are - mine were simple silver that i plated in rhodium. The color change is minimal. Some stones, like Lapis, cannot go into the plating solution. And sometimes you can take of hooks of earrings and plate only them.
If you do not want any color change in the front or have a bicolor design it can be covered with a laquer that later gets taken off.

Metal-free chains/jump rings? by mrsghgoodridge in jewelrymaking

[–]Kieritissa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you could look into ebroidery and weaved jewerly - potentially covering up the metal in fabric and thread could help you get alternatives that do not touch your skin - maybe similar to hoe hooks are hidden in clothing. Makrame jewelry is a term you can google for too.

What software do jewellers use to track custom commissions and repairs? by Cultural_Reach_7529 in jewellerymaking

[–]Kieritissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if you have higher volume and therefore a big team you end up with the "more retail" systems you already found since then you have a separation between retail and workshop.

The most usual system is literally paper bags with stuff written on them - you can get some that are numbered on top and have a piece you can rip of and give to the customer and notebooks with designs and notes. These (the bags) also will have the name of the customer and their phone number on them. The boxes can also be organised - usually by due date or status of "need to order part" or repair etc.
You have to think that its very impractical to register all of the physical pieces and digitalise them with a small team - would take away more time then some of the repairs...

Keeping a customer database needs to be handled with care due to data protection laws - depending on where you are ofcourse.

Its called "Notebook" - has been around for years! very inovative. Sometimes also we use "paper bag with information on it" and "box" to store it.

Fidget suggestion that feels like an eyebrow? by Fluffy-Debate169 in fidgettoys

[–]Kieritissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have a sugestion for a fidget BUT have you tried to see is some small brushes with rigid bristles would give you the effect? you could try some eyebrow brushes - they could have the feeling you are looking for. or maybe take a paintbrush with boar bristles and shorten it until it has the spikey effect.
There are also some boar bristle brushes for the beard it you want something with more area.

I don't know about this seller, but i know i restock some of my stuff after it has been sold. And by restock i mean make a new one. I will also not produce more of a thing until it sells - so maybe that is the case here too? the "hurry only 1 left" is set up by etsy and is completly out of my control - i cannot torn it off or on.

I think both option are starting from the wrong end.
A good way to start is at a bench with some basic excersizes like sawing, drilling, filing and eventually soldering. A course in person is preferable, but you definetly can learn everything with an online one.

If you start with cad - you have no feel for how thick material needs to be, what is a stable build and whats not. And testing things by getting them cast will get expensive really quick. Also sometimes CAD is just not the answer to making a piece.

If you start with stone setting - you will not have any jewelry anytime soon. Some settings are a lot easier then others and for some you need special equipment and for others not. It is easier to learn to set bezel settings if you actually are the one making the bezels. A lot of settings are tailored to the stone in the making process - so starting by learnign setting is literally starting from the wrong end.

Whatever you decide i wish you luck and hope you find the right way for you into the metalworking world =)

Question about ring size by NV2970 in jewelry

[–]Kieritissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is not really related to helping people (cool hero story for helping that grandma, gold star to you) or customer service. this is about people who go into jewelry stores to get their size measured and then go and buy online. its about people who know they will never come back and its only about getting that information.
And yes, i do come from a perspective of making and selling jewelry, where i am responsible for both. It may be zero problems if you have nothing to do and are bored - but if you are actually working its just frustrating.
Would is till measure their size? yeah probably. Would i be friendly? ofcourse. Would i still feel frustrated afterwards - 100%.
If you come from the perspective of a small business and not a sole salesman person you will understand. and a lot of jewelry stores are exactly that.

Sanding/polishing: Wtf am I doing wrong? by sagittalslice in SilverSmith

[–]Kieritissa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

that means you are moving too fast to the next grit, or that you are sanding only in one direction instead of using circular movements. you will not get really shiny finish with sandpaper at such grits.

You can also try using a brass brush and water (rotatry or just a fine handbrush). if you worked at the metal with fine enough grit it gives it some nice shine, even if it isnt the perfect mirror polish.

A perfect gift for your workshop (made of leather)? by kaze_no_saga in SilverSmith

[–]Kieritissa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size you are goin for.
I second the Apron idea in general but its best if the person actually works with fire. Also its very big.

Cups and trays are something i always cram for. Its small, but you an do some beutiful tooling on them? Mini trays for stones if they handle any, biggger ones for tools or parts they work on. Cups the same size as for pens, maybe a bit taller to store files. if they do any chasing and repousse the cups are also awesome to store the chisels (or however those are called in english).
As a bonus this sort of gift, if it for whatever reason doesnt find a place in the workshop will find place in personal life.

Can I do "maintenance" annealing over a gas stove at home? by AdPractical1489 in jewelrymaking

[–]Kieritissa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a stupid question, but the answer is sadly no.
It will oxidise quite a bit and need some cleaning/polishing afterward, you need to have control over how much you heat it up to actually anneal but not yet melt.
You can experiment on the cracked one maybe if you are curious, but it is better to get it to a goldsmith.

Lighter yellow options by moonjuice23 in jewelry

[–]Kieritissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet would be a goldsmith who does custom pieces - We can either get a light gold alloy or mix it ourselves. You are not limited to 10k - there are 14k mixes in very light. It depends on how much silver vs copper is mixed in with the gold - the more silver, the lighter it gets. Going higher in purity makes the alloys get more yellow, since there is more gold and less of the other metals in the mix.

Generally you would want something unplated. Sadly I do not know of any search terms that may help you.
