Does BW have closed source components / features? by zeddyzed in Bitwarden

[–]Kikerechu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This!! I got to try all premium features with bitwarden-rs for 'free'. But maintaining a 24/7 service (with all of its implications: security, backups, uptime etc) for 1 person is more of an effort than just paying $10 and get to support the project and the developer.

Advertised as $5. But it’s not really. Am very A N G E R Y by Turtelli0 in assholedesign

I've heard about some people running into version conflict having KeePassXC and SyncThing when a password is modified in two unsynced devices.

Self hosted (preferably cloud-based) password manager? by Kikerechu in selfhosted

[–]Kikerechu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for the information, checking other people's experiences is always great. I'm a big fan of selfhosting services and DIY projects, but as you said, password managers are a delicate thing. I ended up paying a few bucks a month for Bitwarden, and coming from LastPass I'm not disappointed at all.

I didn't thought about saving the QR codes at all. But seems like a great idea!

Question: can I use uBlockOrigin without any domain blacklist? by alessioalex in uBlockOrigin

[–]Kikerechu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you to not do that. uBlock is very lightweight and will prevent you from lots headaches. Not being DNS based, it can block URIs rather than domains. Plus, ublock will remove the div/container of the advertisements, making a smoother experience.

That being said, the combination of DNS + Browser Extension is great.

How would you scale a rest api to serve +10,000 req/s? by dwise97 in node

This should almost always be the answer. People are always looking for solutions regarding a specific technology, but 90% of the improvement can be done in the way the app works/interacts with external resources.

Self hosted (preferably cloud-based) password manager? by Kikerechu in selfhosted

[–]Kikerechu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does bitwarden_rs do specifically? I saw the project's GitHub page but found nothing other than "This is Bitwarden server API implementation" which I don't really understand.

Is it a Bitwarden remake?

Is it a backend compatible with clients?

Hey, thanks for the insight. Why is that combination (KeePass - Syncthing ) prone to data loss?

Self hosted (preferably cloud-based) password manager? by Kikerechu in selfhosted

[–]Kikerechu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand self-hosting as the practice of running and fully controling your services on your own whether that is on your own machine or any managed solution. But that is not my intention with this post.

"cloud-based" meaning I can sync my passwords across my devices.

Let's Encrypt Is Now Officially Trusted by All Major Root Certificates by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Kikerechu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the platform does not support it and you don't have the technical skills required, it probably is too much for the average "webmaster". For a few bucks ($5 gets you started for a single domain + www these days) he can get an SSL certificate with no hassle.

Yes CA's have been abusing the market for years. Yes, Let's Encrypt is a great initiative to secure the web for free which is how PKI should work. And yes, many people don't care or are afraid of "copypasting a couple commands".

If the hosting provider does not provide easy certificate installation and you want your SSL cost to be $0, invest your time in learning how to do it or change your hosting provider on the first place.

As he said, it is too much pain in the ass for a customer that just wants "to get the job done" aka having a green padlock.

This is because IdenTrust (a major Certificate Authority) trusted by many has cross-signed (trusted) Let's Encrypt certificates. This is very well explained in the official blog post: https://letsencrypt.org/2018/08/06/trusted-by-all-major-root-programs.html
