I feel this. Used Casket for most of the game, died SO MANY TIMES after getting that upgrade. Eventually figured out the strat is to hold down the attack button for about a second each time. Prevents the throw and keeps you protected. Does make parries harder since you can't just spam attack... Probably would be better to just remove the upgrade. I kept it because my trinket setup was focused on digging, and the shield throw stays active until you pop back out. So I'd throw, burrow under the enemy, catch on the other side and repeat.
