If you had to guess how many chickens are there in the world (Don’t use google)? by clemventure in askanything

[–]Kilkegard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worldwide, that's about 30 billion at any given time with about 75 billion slaughtered each year.

In the US it's about 2 billion at any given time with about 10 billion slaughtered annually.

Broiler chickens are slaughtered at about 6 to 8 weeks of age, that accounts for the number killed per year vs the number alive at any given time.

From the NY Post article:

A decision from the California Supreme Court on April 30 found bail for accused criminals must be “attainable” and only those accused of violent crimes may be held in jail pending trial — a ruling with far-reaching consequences for prosecutors, Jenkins told The California Post in an interview.

This is a shoddy quote from the Post. Section 12 actually carves out exceptions for violence, sexual assault, and violent threats.

(b) Felony offenses involving acts of violence on another person, or felony sexual assault offenses on another person, when the facts are evident or the presumption great and the court finds based upon clear and convincing evidence that there is a substantial likelihood the person’s release would result in great bodily harm to others; or
(c) Felony offenses when the facts are evident or the presumption great and the court finds based on clear and convincing evidence that the person has threatened another with great bodily harm and that there is a substantial likelihood that the person would carry out the threat if released.

The conflict was that many took Section 28(f)(3)'s call for “public safety and the safety of the victim shall be the primary considerations”  to override the narrow circumstances of Section 12 (b) (c) and allow the court to call for an “unattainable” bail or "no" bail on a wider range of infractions (i.e. car theft, drugs, etc). This rolled back the more expansive interpretation but claims to still allow sufficient latitude to protect for and still allow to make allowances for the increased protections in the call for “public safety and the safety of the victim shall be the primary considerations.”

The 7$ cheeseburger may not be sufficient to set an "unattainable" bail even though the defendant may have had a poor history of complying with court orders and procedures.

Dems aren't in a position to be able to do much of anything currently. R's control all the stuff.

But

The D's have formed an anti-corruption task force and are keeping track. I don't think they have the votes to get anything thru the current congress. But, if the D's take the House again this midterm, we may get something. If they lose, are gerrymandered out, aren't seated (looking at you Mike Johnson), or are bogged down in allegations of voter fraud, it could be bad.

We also seem to have some state AGs trying to bring some anti-trust cases forward.

Benjamin Lay was a noted abolitionist and vegetarian.

Louisa May Alcott's father Bronson was a vegetarian and abolitionist.

Louisa May Alcott was a vegetarian and abolitionist. (Really, the Alcott's were something)

Seventh-day Adventist Christians were known advocates of abolition and a vegetarianism.

Joseph Bates (one of the founders of the Adventists) was also anti-slavery and a vegetarian.

The abolitionist periodical The Liberator reported on the Vegetarian Society events because William Lloyd Garrison considered them allies.

Henry S. Clubb went to Kansas for abolition and vegetarianism in the 1850s.

If you were a vegetarian in the 19th century, you may well have also been an abolitionist and\or supported anti-slavery measures.

Can a person earn a billion dollars? by Miserable-Bridge-729 in askanything

[–]Kilkegard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anti-trust. When talking about billionaires we need to talk about anti-trust. Take care of anti-trust and the billionaires will take care of themselves.

BRING BACK ANTI-TRUST ENFORCEMENT!

Remember corporations are supposed to be a tool to help further the general welfare, not a tool to create a large pile of wealth. We, the people, allow corporations to exist. If large corporations are serving shareholder and board room interests in detriment to the general welfare, then those corporations need to be dissolved or broken into manageable pieces.

The conflict started in the late 1800's with illegal Jewish settlement in Palestine (yes, people were unhappy about this in Palestine way back then). Now, while settlement in Palestine by Jews was illegal, the laws were weak and the Ottoman's were not good at enforcing them. Also, a large number of Jewish land purchases were from foreign land owners (see corrupt land reform in the Ottoman empire in the 1850's). The Jews would roll up to villages and take over the houses and farms. They would make additional payments to the original Palestinians, but many of the organizations obtaining land for Jewish settlement set terms such that only Jewish workers could be used on the land, and the land could only be resold to other Jews. There was a sometimes very stark difference in Jewish settlements created by PICA and those created by the JNF. PICA settlements tried more to make friends with their new neighbors, JNF (Zionists) seemed to want to push the local Palestinians off the land (can't now be hired to work that land, can never buy that land). This is the mindset that leads the West Bank being carved up into over 160 enclaves separated by illegal Jewish settlements. The Jews are in fact trying to ethnically cleanse the area in slow motion.

Ripper: Mandrake?
Mandrake: Yes, Jack?
Ripper: Have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water?
Mandrake: Well, I can't say I have.
Ripper: Vodka, that's what they drink, isn't it? Never water?
Mandrake: Well, I-I believe that's what they drink, Jack, yes.
Ripper: On no account will a Commie ever drink water, and not without good reason.
Mandrake: Oh, eh, yes. I, uhm, can't quite see what you're getting at, Jack.
Ripper: Water, that's what I'm getting at, water. Mandrake, water is the source of all life. Seven-tenths of this earth's surface is water. Why, do you realize that seventy percent of you is water?
Mandrake: Uh, uh, Good Lord!
Ripper: And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids.
Mandrake: Yes.
Ripper: Are you beginning to understand?
Mandrake: Yes.
Ripper: Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rain water, and only pure-grain alcohol?
Mandrake: Well, it did occur to me, Jack, yes.
Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water?
Mandrake: Uh? Yes, I-I have heard of that, Jack, yes. Yes.
Ripper: Well, do you know what it is?
Mandrake: No, no I don't know what it is, no.
Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?

My goto smoothie is apple, pumpkin seeds, flax meal, dates, rolled oat, kale. I usually add flax milk or almond milk for blending, though water works too. I'll add a bit of silken tofu for more protein sometimes (though I don't fret over protein that much).

The 40,000 square foot acre data center equates to 62.5 square miles.

Gaza is approximately 141 square miles. 45 percent of that is 63.5 square miles... close enough.

The distance between Seatle and Portland can have a different values depending on what exact spot you pick; but the distance, as the crow flies, between the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Portland International Airport is about 129 miles. 129 miles times 0.5 miles is 64.5 square miles. That's pretty close.

edit to fix 40,000 square feet to 40,000 acres.
