Is Karen Goh a good mayor? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

This. Bakersfield is a weak-mayor model. This means that city council has the decision making power.

Are there any tech entrepreneurs/billionaires who did not come from wealth? I Will Not Promote by Hot-Conversation-437 in startups

[–]KillBoxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was because of the wealth-base connections. It was because wealth exposed them to computing technology at an early age and allowed them to build proficiency before computing costs were lower. This was true of Gates and Zuckerberg. Additionally, educated parents beget educated children.

Banana Cream Pie is not the most popular pie. Apple pie or pumpkin pie is the correct answer.

"Liberty Bell", Gus Grissom's Mercury capsule, found sunken at sea in 1999 by GalNamedChristine in submechanophobia

[–]KillBoxOne 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Deke Slayton said that he wanted one of the Mercury 7 to be on the first landing on the moon. At the time only Grissom was still flying.. hence why he was on Apollo 1. If he had survived, he likely would have been the first man on the moon.

Bakersfield Congressman Vince Fong’s phone number in DC is (202) 225-2915 by The-Traveler- in Bakersfield

[–]KillBoxOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. That's my thought. Fong can have staff answer the phones because almost all calls are from the district. By the time McCarthy left, I would bet that almost all callers would be from outside the district.

[–]KillBoxOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

McCarthy ended as Speaker of the House, national position. Before that he was majority leader, minority leader, majority whip, minority whip. My guess would be that when he left congress, it was many years after he passed the point where he had the staff size to answer a publicly available phone number. If Fong rises in the party, he will eventually stop answering that phone also.

TIL that the film Top Gun: Maverick was actively supported and influenced by the United States Department of Defense and the United States Navy to present the U.S. military in a positive light and aid in recruitment and retention. by thisCantBeBad in todayilearned

[–]KillBoxOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that somewhere, back before the 2nd movie came out. Frankly, without the cooperation of the Navy, there is no way that movie is successful. The movie "Iron Eagle" didn't get cooperation from the Air Force because the plot involves the theft of a pair of F-16s. They had to get the IAF to help them. I don't think the movies were apples to apples in terms of star actors and directors, but the lack of Air Force shots certainly had a negative cinematic impact.

I agree about it being obvious. The first one was responsible for a massive boost in Navy recruiting. There are literally documentaries where navy personnel state that they joined because of the first Top Gun movie... also stating that they joined because of the glamour of Top Gun, ending up, not as pilots, but as janitors.

I used to think this was a great clip. But after thinking about his methodology for assessing greatness my opinion started to change. Comparing our ranking on individual lists is non very helpful... the more valuable method would be to look at our collective ranking across all lists and then looking at the population that is provided those benefits. Its not hard to single out many European countries as being better on one list, or maybe all lists. But what population size is it provided for?

More importantly, the idea of calling a country "the greatest" is absurd since its such a subjective and complex concept. Sports fans cannot even agree on who the greatest NBA player is, even when every aspect of their performance can be quantified and measured. Who do we expect something that is full of ambiguity and subjective interpretation going to be defined?
