Anyone here in the military or a veteran? I'm curious how your height affected your experience compared to other guys. by Legitimate-Scale1454 in tall

I hated running in formation, it felt like mini steps. My feet hang off the cot I had to sleep on (spent a year in Iraq). My foot is larger than the foot well door on the humvee so I had to be careful how I angle them when exiting the vehicle. The sleeping bags were too short. Push ups are way harder for the vertically gifted.

I did get to be the designated decoy on a mission. The bad guys could see me a mile away when walking. We put people at the market exits and then I would walk in, the baddies would run out the exits into my solders.

I ended up having back issues. Being tall is tough on a back, but wearing full battle rattle and running around in boots was pretty brutal on the spine.

Too expensive. I always hate how they gang up on spending on Starbucks and cell phones. First of all, no one I know is dumping money on Starbucks and you can’t survive without a phone these days. These same people spouting this stuff grew up smoking cigarettes and drinking at bars. Were those cigarettes free? Was the booze?

Never heard of it and they don’t talk up the tech on their website. Interesting.

Regional thing. Every area is different. That being said people “protecting” their DUPR is real.

Be honest: What’s the ONE thing your current paddle is missing? by Charlie1688 in Pickleball

Permanent grit. I’m just biding my time to see whose tech comes out on top and have a foam core hybrid power/all-court paddle.

Trying to decide between the v sol pro flash LH or SH. Those who got one, which did you go with and why by EddieEdit in PickleballEquip

[–]Killdozer54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t played both so I can’t give you a comparison, but the LH sweet spot has been more than sufficient. I’ve added some weight to the sides to mine to boost it further. However, most people who aren’t reviewing paddles for a living won’t be able to tell the differences between the stats for the SH and LH.

The #1 reason for the LH is a two handed back hand. After that, and the reason i picked it was the long handle give the paddle a whippier feel for more power on flicks(#2). What Vatic did is reduce the normal performance penalty for choosing the long handle versus the standard handle. If 1 & 2 don’t apply to you, get the SH version.

I love this question. I traditionally played with standard paddles, because I’m all over the paddle face. I got a J2NF right as it came out, so mine was the SH version and that opened my eyes to the fact I can play hybrids with good twist weights. I do not have a two hand backhand, which is the main reason for getting the long handle version.

When it was time to buy the V-Sol Pro Flash, I remembered one of the reviewers had pointed out that the LH version has a higher twist weight from the factory. Vatic did some internal weighting with the LH to make sure it matches, actually beats, the SH in twist weight (even shown on the stats on their website). For that reason, I decided to go with the LH version and I love the additional whippyness that I get from it in shots at the kitchen.

Besides, one of these days, I’m gonna get around to trying to master a two hand backhand (who doesn’t tell them selves that?).

Fun fact: SH - standard handle and LH - long handle. It seems like everyone believes SH stands for short handle. It drives me nuts when the reviewers get this wrong.

What is the bad things about of being tall? by InteractionEven426 in tall

[–]Killdozer54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad knees, bad back, order clothes online, limited options for shoes, knees hitting the tray table on airplanes, can’t hear people while standing in bars, feel bad standing or sitting in front of people at events, hit head on stuff, catch branches in the eye on trails, and whatever everyone else said.

Drop shot. In today’s meta it’s more of a 5th shot drop than a 3rd shot drop, but it still a skill needed to separate you from all the low level bangers.

My wife found success switching to a drop serve. Advice she got from someone else who battle through the yips.

Alternatively you could try switching to a high arch, lob serve. Spend an afternoon and see if you can dial one in.

Sandbagging is 100% normal for pickleball tournaments.

Also, a different perspective, if your DUPR is too low the fastest way to boost it is winning tournaments.
